Since graduating from West Linn High School in 2017 there was a brief detour but the athletic 6-foot-3 guard settled in nicely the past couple of seasons at Lane. Interest from four-year schools has come in and Hounshell is looking over his options trying to decide what’s the right destination for him, a lot of it thanks to how he did in 2019-20.
“This past season at Lane went great for me,” Hounshell said. “It didn’t go as I expected, since we lost a lot of guys to grades and injuries but for me personally it set me up into a position of where I had to go get it mainly and step up for our team. We had plenty of up and downs this season but it made us better whether we lost or won.”
Hounshell certainly performed up to par. He had great per game averages across the board with 19.2 points, 6.9 rebuonds, and 2.8 assists. He shot it well from distance at over 40 percent and his 85 percent-plus free throw shooting ranked in the top ten in the NWAC – and he did all this with an impairment of sorts.
“My game progressed from this off season to now – the numbers show and they continue to get better,” Hounshell continued. “People also don’t even realize what I did I also played with a mask basically the whole season.”
Lane has become a stop for college coaches to visit over the past few years and this season was no exception. They certainly noticed Hounshell and he’s picked up offers from NCAA Division II members Montana State Billings and Clafin and NAIA institutions Northwest Christian, Corban, and Mid-American. He notes that about ten other schools have been in contact and while he’s keeping all of his options open, he does have a goal. Hounshell broke down his factors.
“I’m planning on playing in the Division II stage,” Hounshell said. “I’m looking at the style of play, the open spaces offense I want to be able to fit right in. And of course the education side of it, if the school has my major. And if I feel like the school and coaches are going to push me to be the best player and person.”
Hounshell notes that he’s actually open to going East for school but location is not a big factor for him. Ideally he’d like to take some visits but he could very well commit sooner rather than later. “I probably will commit before as I can’t take any visits due to everything going on,” Hounshell said.
