Continue ReadingFenwick 2022 point guard Trey Pettigrew took his game to new heights as a sophomore. He elevated his stock becoming the #2 overall prospect in the PHI 2022 Rankings and top guard. What makes him a special prospect? Pettigrew had a dominant start to his sophomore season and it continued all the way through the playoffs! What we like most about Pettigrew’s game is how well he works around ball screens. Uses the screen to create and has a feel when to pull up for the three ball. Big time pull up jump shooter from both mid-range and three. His athleticism shines getting to the rim off the bounce, coming off screens, and in the open floor. Like what he brings to the table defensively putting pressure on at the point of attack and creating turnovers. The thing with this guard is he has produced every single time out in prime time games!
Pettigrew spoke about his sophomore campaign at Fenwick.
“I think the season went great. I got the chance to take up a major role on the team and become more mature as a player. The team did great as well. Being as young as we are people got the chance to make a name for themselves and lots of them stepped up. Even with the team being so young I think winning state was a big possibility.”
He made major strides in his game and confidence throughout the season. What areas did he see the biggest improvements?
“Getting bigger and stronger opened a lot of new doors for me. I was able to finish around the rim more and get to any spot on the court I wanted to. As the year went on my shot just kept getting better and will continue to so it allows me to play at all three levels.”
Pettigrew formed quite a 1-2 punch with #2 junior Bryce Hopkins Bryce Hopkins 6'7" | PF Fenwick | 2021 State #32 Nation IL this season for the Friars.
“We take a lot of pressure off each other when we are playing. We grew a relationship on and off the court and that helped a lot. We put a lot of trust into each other and he’s never doubted my abilities. We talked before the season and we both knew we had to become the main playmakers on the team and he’s helped me with that every step of the way.”
He updated us on his early recruitment.
“Same two offers (UW-Milwaukee and Penn State). Lots of interest and hoping to take lots more visits now that the season just ended. Waiting to see the next step for the EYBL where I’m confidence most of the recruitment will start to heavily pick up.”
Pettigrew’s first offer came from Penn State where he visited last summer.
“The coaching staff is amazing. Obviously the love shown from everyone on campus was amazing and the team being older and more experienced makes such a tight bod and they are very exciting to watch.”
UW-Milwaukee dished out an offer to the sophomore in December. What stands out about them?
“The environment and Coach Baldwin is a great coach!”
Several other programs are starting to express early interest in Pettigrew.
“Xavier, Wisconsin, Purdue, Iowa, Chicago State, and Belmont.”
He plans on playing with the Mac Irvin Fire this spring and summer.
