Recruiting Report: Brandon Weston
Morgan Park shooting guard Brandon Weston came into the season as one of the prospects we were most looking forward to seeing how he performed. The #3 junior in the state more than lived up to the hype after not playing last season as a transfer.
Weston is an athletic two guard that plays with a high motor. He is explosive with the ball in his hands getting downhill whether it is in transition or the half court. His shooting made strides and his rebounding set him apart from wings nationally. We caught up with Weston to get the latest on his season and recruitment. He started off by chatting about his season with the Mustangs.
“I felt this season was great for me on and off the court with my brothers. We had a lot of ups and downs, but stayed together through it all. I can say junior season was good for me because I got to show people what type of player I am and my abilities despite not playing last year.”
Weston spoke with us about where he saw the most growth in his game.
“This season I really focused on my overall game and dominating on all three levels. I can say my basketball IQ and playing at a high level on both ends has improved over the season.”
There has been a lot of talk about Weston’s recruitment. Both destination and graduating class. He gave us the latest.
“Still deciding if I’m going to reclass up or not, but my recruitment has been going good. A lot of schools have been reaching out. Right now I’m just figuring out what school is best for me and my game.”
What is his timeline and what is going into making a decision if he will reclassify to the 2020 class?
“I’ll definitely know in the next couple months, but it’s just on what schools have to offer and if it’s the right situation for me and if I feel like I’m ready yet because I want to come to college and make an immediate impact. So I’m just exploring my options and making sure I make the right choice.”
What schools have made it known to Weston they would take him as a 2020 recruit?
“Wake Forest, Iowa State, Nebraska, and Illinois too.”
He recently went down to Champaign for a visit to see Illinois with his teammate and Illini commit Adam Miller Adam Miller 6'4" | PG Morgan Park | 2020 State #34 Nation IL . He spoke about what left an impression on him during the visit.
“The culture really stood out to me. All the fans were really intense and kind down at Illinois. Every seat was filled and the student section was crazy so I can definitely say they show a lot of love and support down there. Being out there with Adam it felt like we were superstars. Everyone was greeting us and asking for pictures so the energy and love was definitely there.”
During the season he also visited Wake Forest and Cincinnati. Wake Forest has been a school heavily in the mix for Weston for a while.
“The campus was great. The facilities were crazy. Their daily schedule really stood out because it’s all grind and that’s all I want to do is grind.”
This will be one of the most interesting recruitments to track in the state over the next few months!
