But until you have seen Devon Malcolm play in person, you haven’t gotten the full breadth of the level of athleticism and raw potential he has. The explosive 6-foot-3, 185-pound sophomore put those on display last Friday night in Portland at Columbia Christian, and although he and his Butte Falls team went home with a season-ending loss, Malcolm served noticed that he is definitely one to watch going forward.
It was a tough night for Malcolm and the Loggers as they fell behind early and was never really able to recover, losing 69-36. “It was a really weird season and there was a lot of adversity we had to get through to be honest,” Malcolm said. “We had a bunch of forfeits and we lost our championship game for the league. We didn’t want to start right out and get Columbia Christian first, so we didn’t want this at all.”
While the margin was large, Malcolm individually tried his best and had some moments. He played hard from start to finish, including twice after where it looked like he got injured but instead he quickly asked to get put back in the game. Malcolm used his strength and athleticism to attack the basket and on one fast break, he threw down a thunderous dunk over Knights 7-footer Mo Hartwich, bringing the crowd to its feet. He ended the night with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
“This year I think I definitely improved from last year,” Malcolm said. “There was a lot of mental focus and preparation and I got my mind into the game instead of letting my emotions take over. I just played my game.”
Tucked away in Butte Falls – a 45 minute drive away from the Medford area – Malcolm has largely been hidden, or so you would think. The truth of the matter is that college programs have already gotten wind of his exploits and the young sophomore already has started looking ahead to his recruitment.
“A bunch of the Pac-12 are interested in me,” Malcolm said. “My two dream schools are North Carolina and Duke. But if none of those fall out on the East Coast, I’ll probably try to stay close to home like U of O or OSU if I can. I just have to keep working and get those offers.”
There’s obviously plenty of time when it comes to making any kids of decisions for the sophomore. With the high school season over for him, he now turns his attention to AAU ball where he’ll be playing with A Train Oregon this spring and summer. “I’ll definitely be coming out to compete,” Malcolm said. “I want to show people who I am and I want my game to speak for me.”
Malcolm will initially start out ranked 9th in the next update of the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings but you can bet that he will be moving up.
