Continue ReadingAs previously noted, the class of 2022 here in South Florida is loaded. An additional talent out of North Broward Prep is 6’8″ forward Justin Abson. Abson guided the Eagles to an 18-11 record and a spot in the 4A-13 district championship this past season. Like similar stars in the South Florida area, the sophomore picked up the game long before making a name for himself in Coconut Creek.
“My dad always had a ball in my hands”, said Abson. “When I was little I played on those Little Tykes basketball hoops. He would always take me to the park to work on my game and after that I just fell in love with it.”
With his father’s guidance, the hard work Abson developed at a young age seems to be paying off. According to MaxPreps, the sophomore averaged a double-double this season with 15.9 points and 12.8 rebounds per game. In addition, Abson swatted away an impressive 2.6 blocks per game with his 7’2″ wingspan. A consistent scorer for North Broward Prep, Abson finished in double figures in all but three games this season.
“I think I am a strong interior offensive and defensive player,” said Abson. “Within my offensive game, I am confident in my mid-range shooting ability.”
With the high school season now at a close, Abson has high hopes this summer in improving his college stock. In the upcoming months, he will once again run with the NightRydas on the AAU circuit. You can view his current ranking in our system here.
“I am looking to develop over the next several months in becoming a more versatile defender,” said Abson. “On the offensive side of the ball, I would like to extend out more on the perimeter and become more consistent with my 3-point shot. My goal is to win the Nike Peach Jam again on the circuit this summer.”
With those goals in mind, Abson believes more schools will come calling about him. Currently, he holds an offer from Stetson University. Furthermore, he has received interest from Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic, Florida A&M, Texas – San Antonio, Iowa State, and Murray State.
“In terms of recruitment I would like to pick up three to six more offers from schools,” said Abson. Moreover, I am hoping to draw six to seven more interests from programs.”
While further exposure is on the horizon, the sophomore’s dominance has already been on full display. Against Miami Country Day, Abson dropped 27 points and 15 rebounds. The all-around effort turned around North Broward Prep after halftime, who ended up winning by ten points. In addition to that line, Abson posted double-doubles against Gulliver Prep (24/20), Leesburg (20/15) and Fort Lauderdale (18/11). With those numbers, it may come as little surprise who this South Florida talent admires in the professional ranks.
“I really look up to dominate, inside players on the NBA level,” said Abson. “Guys that come to mind our Shaquille O’Neil and Tim Duncan. I also look up to Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins because of how versatile they are. Both of those players can really handle the ball and they can shoot too.”
While Abson is already on radar watch here in South Florida, look for him to blow up as a household name nationally with a big 2020 campaign. North Broward Prep has a special player and the rest of the country is about to see it too.
