Many in the class of 2023 showed why the future of Nevada Prep Basketball looks bright. In this article PH awards the player of the year and the 1st, and 2nd team members of the Nevada All-Freshman team. Note: This team only includes players that played Varsity during the 2019-20 season.
POY Sebastian Mack Sebastian Mack 6'4" | CG Coronado | 2023 State #58 Nation NV 6’1 SG Durango (#1) (featured image) – Mack put together a remarkable season. He showed poise, clutchness, and resiliency rarely seen by freshmen players. I was there the day he missed two free throws with the game tied in a Tarkanian semi. Mack used that adversity to elevate his game from that point on, culminating with a remarkable playoff shooting performance as Durango made a run to the state semis. Easy choice for Nevada freshman of the year and IMO clearly one of the top Freshman on the west coast.
1st Team
Osiris Grady 6’7 C Silverado (#3) 6ppg 5rpg – The big man proved to be relatively durable, producing in 20 of the 26 games on the season. Despite limited minutes Grady proved to be a productive rebounder and finisher.
Joshua Valencia 6’3 C GV Christian 15ppg 8.4rpg – I heard a lot about Valencia throughout the season, never got to see him in person. His numbers speak for themselves as the 250lb center was the leading scorer for the 7-1 1A South runner ups.
David Poole David Poole 5'10" | PG Valley | 2023 State NV 5’10 PG Mojave (#11) 8ppg – Poole proved he fits right in with the speed and physicality of the varsity level. The hard-driving guard had a season-high 22 against Del Sol back in January.
Logan Howren Logan Howren 6'4" | SG Bishop Manogue | 2023 State NV 6’3 SG Bishop Manogue (#12) 9ppg 2apg 5 rpg 2 spg – Really love Howrens game. Does a little bit of everything. Defensively he reminds me of a taller younger version of Cort Ballinger Cort Ballinger 5'10" | PG Bishop Manogue | 2021 State NV .
Jake Bevacqua Jake Bevacqua 5'10" | PG The Meadows School | 2023 State NV 5’8 PG The Meadows school 19ppg – While battling injuries Bevacqua proved why he is one of the best young PG’s in the city. Despite only playing 16 games, Bevacqua finished with over 20 points in half of them.
2nd team
Sterling Knox 6’3 SF Durango (#4) – I’m sure Knox would admit that he didn’t have the impact that he wanted, however, he came up big in several key moments throughout the season to help the Trailblazers to 20 wins and a trip to Reno.
Karson Roberts 5’10 PG Bonanza 7ppg 3apg 3rpg – The floor spacing PG was one of the bright spots for a Bonanza team that finished under 500.
TJ Brown TJ Brown 5'10" | CG Las Vegas | 2023 NV 5’9 PG Las Vegas (#5) 5.4 ppg – Playing behind one of the top young PG’s in the state, Brown had an up and down season. His production, however, did help a young Wildcat team overachieve
Marcus Fizer Jr Marcus Fizer Jr 6'6" | SG Phhoenix Prep | 2024 State AZ 6’4 SG Silverado (#2) 10ppg 3rpg – Yea I know he only played in 11 games… but look what he did in those 11! In his 11 games, he finished 6 of them in double figures and if you take out the Gorman game and the Legacy Semi game against Payson he averaged nearly 11 points per.
Ryan Hannig 5’10 PG The Meadows 11.6ppg – Underrated playmaker who was one of the leading scorers for a Meadows squad that advanced to Reno.
