Choosing a total of 15 players to make up the first, second, and third teams was no easy task. Our staff deliberated for a significant amount of time before finally coming up with the names below. FIRST TEAM
Spalding’s Cam Whitmore was a no-brainer first-team selectionG – Trey Thomas Trey Thomas 6'3" | PG Wise | 2022 MD | Wise – Player of the Year*
Ayalew – Thomas truly burst onto the scene this year as the go-to-guy for a sneaky-good Wise team. He was a threat to score 30+ each time he hit the court, but also racked up the rebounds and assists.
G – Tyson Commander Tyson Commander 6'4" | SG The John Carroll School | 2022 State #203 Nation MD | John Carroll
Giacubeno – Commander was key in John Carroll’s turnaround season and spearheaded their outside shooting attack with his limitless range. The 6-foot-3 lefty also showed improvement in making plays for others off the bounce and putting a more concerted effort toward the defensive end.
F – Darren Buchanan Jr. Darren Buchanan Jr. 6'7" | PF Woodrow Wilson | 2022 State #101 Nation MD | Woodrow Wilson
Ayalew – Buchanan was as steady as ever this season. The highly-productive and versatile point-forward was named DCIAA player of the year and showed growth as a leader.
F – Cam Whitmore | Archbishop Spalding
Giacubeno – Whitmore was one of the biggest question marks coming into the season after nursing knee injuries his entire freshman year. He quickly put those worries to rest with his dominant play as a scorer and rebounder for an Archbishop Spalding team that gained major traction late in the season. The 6-foot-7 wing’s versatility was on full display throughout the season.
C – Favour Aire Favour Aire 6'10" | C Bishop McNamara | 2022 State #86 Nation MD | Bishop McNamara
Wilson – Favour helped McNamara establish themselves as a tough out in the WCAC this year because of his presence in the low post. Aire is possibly the top shot-blocker in the area and seemed to improve his offensive game as the year went on. Aire will be considered one of the top big men nationally in the 2022 class.
*Unanimous Selection
SECOND TEAM
Gilman’s [player_tooltip player_id="777071" first="Christian" last="Winborne"] enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaignG – Devin Dinkins Devin Dinkins 5'10" | PG Gonzaga | 2022 State MD | Gonzaga
Wilson – Dinkins has already played a major role for Gonzaga at such a young age, especially with his ability to make shots from deep areas on the floor. Dinkins is primed to have even more of an importance next year with the departure of Chuck Harris Chuck Harris 6'1" | PG Gonzaga | 2020 State #152 Nation MD .
G – Rodney Rice Rodney Rice 6'4" | CG DeMatha | 2022 State #89 Nation MD | Bullis
Wilson – Missing a good portion of the season because of injury, Rice had already made a significant impact to earn second team. Rice is in the conversation as one of the top scorers in the DMV regardless of class and is going to have crazy numbers during his last two years of high school.
G – Christian Winborne Christian Winborne 6'2" | CG Gilman | 2022 State #199 Nation MD | Gilman
Giacubeno – Winborne took complete control for Gilman as the primary ball-handler and showed great competence in knowing when to score or get others involved. His will to win and improved basketball IQ spread throughout his team, which finished first in their division of the MIAA A Conference.
F – Tyrell Ward Tyrell Ward 6'7" | SF DeMatha | 2022 State #56 Nation MD | DeMatha
Ayalew – On a loaded DeMatha team, Tyrell Ward Tyrell Ward 6'7" | SF DeMatha | 2022 State #56 Nation MD found a way to make an impact each time he hit the floor. A trusted member of Coach Jones’ rotation, Ward filled a myriad of roles on both ends of the court whether he started or came off the bench.
C – Cesar Tchilombo Cesar Tchilombo 6'8" | C John Carroll | 2022 MD | John Carroll
Giacubeno – Tchilombo put together an impressive sophomore campaign with his ability to control games through shot-blocking and rebounding. The 6-foot-8 center is making strides offensively and adding to his repertoire with his back to the basket and remaining efficient.
THIRD TEAM

Giacubeno – Perry showed that he’s a crafty point guard who can score and lead a team to wins in the MIAA A Conference. At 5-foot-8 he’s extremely quick with the ball, has deep range on his three-point shot and can make others around him better.
G – Delonte Raynor Delonte Raynor 6'2" | CG Fairmont Heights | 2022 State MD | Fairmont Heights
Ayalew – Raynor thrived as a versatile utility player for a dangerous Fairmont Heights team. Coach Chuck Henry deployed him in a variety of spots where he was able to help contribute to wins.
F – Noah Batchelor Noah Batchelor 6'6" | SF IMG Academy | 2022 State #184 Nation FL | Glenelg Country
Giacubeno – Batchelor came into the year with high expectations after a huge summer. While it took time for him to adjust to a new team, he had games where those expectations were proven correct. The 6-foot-7 wing can stretch the floor with his jumper and make athletic plays around the rim.
F – Stephaun Walker Stephaun Walker 6'7" | PF Coolidge | 2022 State MD | Coolidge
Ayalew – Walker was once again one of the most productive players in the city this year. The blossoming sophomore is still scratching the surface which is a scary proposition for his opponents.
