Compiling three teams consisting of five players was extremely difficult with the amount of talent this class showcased this season. With us keeping the teams to just five players, it was expected to make some tough decisions and leave players who deserve recognition off the list. Rightfully so, we’ll bring those players to light as a part of our honorable mention category.
Tremaine Chesley Tremaine Chesley 6'3" | CG St. Charles | 2020 State MD | 6’4 | St. Charles
Chesley was as close as you can get to making 3rd Team after playing a crucial role for the 27-1 St. Charles Spartans. The 6-foot-4 guard has quickly built the reputation as being one of the best defenders in the DMV. His combination of size and length allow him to guard multiple positions and make him extremely valuable when evaluating for the next level. Chesley did the majority of his damage offensively by getting downhill and finishing strong around the rim. In the half court he was a slasher with the ball and in transition his size presented problems to teams St. Charles went up against. He willingly guarded the opposing team’s best player and limited them as much as possible. Maryland Eastern Shore and LaSalle have been the two Division I programs that kept an eye on Chesley while multiple high level Division II programs remain involved.
Jomo Goings Jomo Goings 6'4" | CG Churchill | 2020 State MD | 6’3 | Winston Churchill
Goings had a breakout season helping lead the Bulldogs to a 17-8 overall record and an Elite 8 appearance in the Class 4A State Playoffs. The 6-foot-3 combo guard carried the load offensively for his team averaging 25 points per game. He also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out three assists per contest. Goings is extremely efficient as a scorer and can do so from all three levels. Churchill runs countless sets in the half court. Goings effectively used pin down screens, flex cuts and quick isolation sets to free himself up for looks. In the open floor, Goings was a nightmare to guard as he used his athleticism and shiftiness to finish at the rim. Defensively he was used to guard multiple positions. He possesses the quickness to guard either guard position or could defend wing players with his size and length.
Tyler Brelsford Tyler Brelsford 6'4" | CG Mount Saint Joseph | 2020 State MD | 6’2 | Mt. St. Joseph
Brelsford stepped up in a major way for Mt. St. Joe this season taking on more of the play making responsibilities James Bishop (LSU) left behind. The 6-foot-2 guard built a reputation of being a deadly three-point shooter, but made the majority of his impact off the dribble as a senior. An overlooked part of Brelsford’s offensive skill set his how he gets to the free-throw line on a consistent basis. He’s deceptive and drawing fouls by baiting his defender on pump fakes and change-of-pace dribbles in the paint. The George Washington commit made plays late in big games, which ultimately helped push the Gaels over nationally ranked St. Frances in the MIAA A Championship. Seeing Brelsford’s progressions in his overall game is encouraging as he head to play in a challenging A-10 Conference.
Yuri Covington Yuri Covington 6'2" | CG National Christian | 2020 State MD | 6’2 | National Christian Academy
Covington had a productive season for the 23-6 Eagles both as a scorer and contributor. As 2021 guard Jakai Robinson Jakai Robinson 6'4" | SF Rock Creek Christian | 2021 State #53 Nation MD gains much of the defense’s attention, Covington forced those schemes to adjust during games as he consistently beat his man off the dribble and finished strong at the rim. The 6-foot-2 guard contorts his body in unique ways to avoid shot blockers in the paint and still finishes his crafty lay ups with soft touch. When his defender slacked off beyond the arc, Covington made him pay. Overall, his production made National Christian a much more difficult team to guard and contain. Covington announced his commitment to William & Mary yesterday.
Keyshawn Johnson Keyshawn Johnson 6'1" | CG Fairmont Heights | 2020 State MD | 6’1 | Fairmont Heights
It seems like every year Fairmonth Heights is among the top teams in the DMV and they’re always led by one key scorer. This year that was Keyshawn Johnson Keyshawn Johnson 6'1" | CG Fairmont Heights | 2020 State MD . The 6-foot-1 combo guard had breakout games on a regular basis by scoring from all three-levels. It really just depended on how he was feeling on that given day. On what looks to be the last game of their season in a state quarterfinal win at Havre de Grace, Johnson led the way with an impressive 34-point outing. Earlier this season Johnson turned in another 34-point performance against Freedom (Woodbridge) High School. 27 of those 34 points came from beyond the arc. His scoring ability was on full display throughout this season and it was why Fairmont Heights had been prepared for another Final Four appearance in the 1A Class.
