Standouts
Kenard Richardson | 6’3” G | Life Christian 2021
If there was an MVP award for the state championships, there’s no way that Richardson wouldn’t have won it for D3. While there were quite a few guys on LCA that stood out, Richardson was the heart and soul as their main ball handler, toughest defender and go-to guy to get a bucket or create for others. He’s one of the more underrated guys in the 2021 class and has now won two state championships, one with Varina three years ago and one with LCA now.
Ikechi Chantilou | 6’3” WG | Life Christian 2021
Richardson’s side kick on the wing and in the backcourt, Chantilou had a bounce back year after a down year at George Wythe last year and capped it off with a big performance in the state championship. He’s a natural athlete that’s long and brings it on both ends, he finished quite a few plays above the rim and stayed in attack mode throughout the game. He brought great energy at times and he showed he knows how to use his size on both ends of the floor.
Logan Washington | 6’6” PF | Life Christian 2020
Washington has been a huge part of LCA’s turn around over the last few years and was the most experienced returner on the team, and his size was the difference in both of their wins against Covenant and Eastern Mennonite. He’s a blue collar and low maintenance guy that is extremely long and bouncy and gets off his feet very quickly. On both ends of the floor he dominated at and above the rim with a number of impressive dunks and blocks, and he’s now a two time state champion at LCA.
Jonas Sanker | 6’2” G | Covenant 2021
Sanker was quietly one of the best players in VISAA D3 all season and was the main reason they were even in the position they were in. The 6’2” two sport standout that also excels on the football field, Sanker is a physical and athletic specimen who stays in attack mode and is a terrific finisher through contact. He’s a gem in the Charlottesville area that should be a steal in whatever sport he picks.
Aviwe Mahlong | 6’2” G/F | Eastern Mennonite 2020
” width=”300″ height=”225″ />
The South African native has been one of the main reasons for the come up at Eastern Mennonite over the last two years, and the kid fought until the very end in their loss to LCA. In the semifinals he was the hero, as he scored a team high 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, but his moment came when he hit two free throws with less than 2 seconds left to beat Carmel and head to the championship. He will be attending D2 Millersville University in Pennsylvania next year.
Chance Church | 6’0” G | Eastern Mennonite 2020
Church didn’t have his best game in the semifinals but he made some big shots and was the heart and soul of the team throughout both games. A sniper of a guard who hit a number of threes he showed a good IQ and improved handles and he competed on both ends all the way until the end. He’s a guy that smaller schools should consider going to see late.
Adam Hatter 5’10” PG | Eastern Mennonite 2022
The younger brother of last year’s star Zach Hatter, Adam had a coming out party in the semifinal game where he was big time in their win over Carmel. The 5’10” guard ran the show and got them into their sets, he took care of the basketball and he hit shots both off the catch and off the bounce. In that win he finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds and didn’t turn the basketball over once.
Josh Campbell | 6’3” WG | Carmel School 2020
” width=”300″ height=”225″ />
Campbell’s high school career didn’t end the way he wanted to but he had an outstanding career and went out swinging all the way until the end. The big guard showed a great motor on both ends, stayed in attack mode and showed that he can score in a number of ways. He finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds and came up huge down the stretch to give them a chance to win.
Elijah Roye | 6’8” PF | Carmel School 2020
In his final game at Carmel, Roye played one of the most complete games I’ve seen him play in high school. The 6’8” big man played with a lot of heart in the middle as he used his size against the smaller EMHS team to dominate in the paint. He showed good touch and pursued the basketball well off the rim, finishing with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.
