College Commitment: David Gonzales (2020 Silverton HS)
After a season where he earned Mid-Willamette Player of the Year and led Silverton to the state tournament, David Gonzales David Gonzales 5'11" | PG Silverton | 2020 State OR had to figure out the next right step for him. There were definitely some different routes he could have taken when it came to college, but when it all came down to it for the tough 5-foot-11, 160-pound point guard he didn’t have to look far from home. This week Gonzales signed to play his college hoops at Corban and he couldn’t be happier about the decision.
“I thought it was a great fit,” Gonzales said. “It’s close to my family and they offered me a great deal. I’ve grown up going to all their games and stuff and I’ve always seeing the Corban atmosphere. I like Coach (Mitch) Freeman a lot and the whole coaching staff is really nice to me. They’ve treated me super well and I thought it would be a great fit.”
Gonzales had considered a number of other options, including starting out his college career at the JC level. But Corban provided him with everything he wanted including the one thing that put things over the top. “It’s a faith-based school and I like that I lot,” Gonzales said. “I grew up in Catholic school all my life until Silverton and that was the biggest factor. It was that and Coach Freeman.”
This past season for the Silver Foxes, Gonzales averaged 19.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists and did a great job at the point guard spot. Despite all his high school accomplishments and accolades he knows he has room to improve for the collegiate level at Corban. “I have to get more vocal as a point guard and be a better leader,” Gonzales said.
As he works this off-season to prepare for that, Gonzales can also look back on this past season – and his high school career. “Honestly this was one of my favorite years out of all four,” Gonzales said. “The team was the most bonded group that we’ve been the past four years. Obviously I didn’t want it to end like that but there are bigger things than basketball. I’m just overall grateful for all the coaches, Coach McCarty, and the players – I appreciate all the time I got to spend with them.”
Gonzales currently ranks as the #13 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
