Coming into the season, whispers of how good the Wyoming team could be began to be heard around the West Michigan area. Contending for a OK Gold title seemed possible given the returning talent the Wolves had, however, very few people had to of envisioned what unfolded. Fast-forward three months, Wyoming is 18-2, champions of arguably the hardest division in the Ottawa Kent Conferences, and primed for it’s most memorable March since the likes of Drew Neitzel led then Wyoming Park to a Final Four appearance.
Menalito McGee Menalito McGee 5'10" | PG Wyoming | 2020 State MI deserves an enormous amount of credit for all the success Wyoming has had so far. In my opinion, he’s been without a doubt, the most exciting player to watch this season, going off for games of 45 and 48-points. His Harden-esque side step to create enough space to rain threes on opponents is deadly. Even more impressive is the tenacity he plays with in all facets of the game. He simply doesn’t take a play off, and will undoubtedly be as tough of an out as there is this March.
Kobe Bufkin Kobe Bufkin 6'4" | SG Grand Rapids Christian | 2021 State #71 Nation MI , Grand Rapids Christian, 2021
Aside from Menalito McGee Menalito McGee 5'10" | PG Wyoming | 2020 State MI , there might not be a more must-watch prospect than Grand Rapids’ Christian’s Kobe Bufkin Kobe Bufkin 6'4" | SG Grand Rapids Christian | 2021 State #71 Nation MI . Currently checking in the top-100 of the 2021 class, Kobe’s skill set has the eyes of several Big Ten programs and beyond.
Armed with a money mid-range jumper, bunnies for hops and a lethal passing ability, Kobe can hurt you in more ways than one, keeping other teams guessing for a full 32 minutes. He gives an already loaded Christian team a great chance of representing West Michigan at the Breslin Center at the end of the month.
Jimmy Scholler Jimmy Scholler 6'4" | SG Forest Hills Central | 2020 State MI , Forest Hills Central, 2020
One of the most consistent producers West Michigan has to offer is Forest Hills Central’s Jimmy Scholler Jimmy Scholler 6'4" | SG Forest Hills Central | 2020 State MI . The premier guard posted several 30-point games this season, leading the Rangers to a share of the OK White title. In addition to his ability to score, Jimmy is a dynamic defender who can match up with multiple positions due to his length and footwork.
The future Ferris State Bulldog is a tough guard given his length and can create his own shot off the dribble. If he and fellow Ranger Mitch Wilkinson Mitch Wilkinson 6'5" | Guard Forest Hills Central | MI can both put it together in unison, the Rangers will be contenders to make a run this post season.
Justin DeGraaf Justin DeGraaf 6'7" | PF Hudsonville | 2020 State MI , Hudsonville, 2020
Already spoiled with key returnees from its Regional Final team from a season ago, Hudsonville came into the season with high expectations. Those expectations skyrocketed and a heightened sense of excitement grew due in large part to Justin DeGraaf Justin DeGraaf 6'7" | PF Hudsonville | 2020 State MI ‘s decision to transfer to Hudsonville from the Indianapolis area.
DeGraaf has lived up to the hype this season, leading Hudsonville to an undefeated record in the OK Red and 18-2 record overall. His above-the-rim athleticism and arsenal of post moves gives Hudsonville a dynamic that is hard to match, and is reason why a trip to the Breslin Center is in the Eagles’ sights.
Jarvis Walker Jarvis Walker 6'2" | PG Muskegon | 2020 State #416 Nation MI , Muskegon, 2020
The senior point guard led the Big Reds to a OK Black title this season and a 18-2 record overall. Signed to play at Purdue Fort-Wayne next season, Jarvis has displayed all the characteristics one looks for in a point guard. Blessed with a pure stroke and a steady handle, Jarvis is a threat to score in a variety of ways.
Heading into the Division I tournament, Jarvis is the type of player that can take over games and single handily further a team’s season. However, given how talented Muskegon is this season, the Big Reds won’t necessarily need 30 points a game from Jarvis, even if it is well within his arsenal.
