This group of players were either on teams in lower divisions or weren’t the main focus on their high school varsity teams. They will be counted upon when the high school season begins.
Jack Cheng 6’9 Valley Christian, (San Jose CA)
A very big thick player that has strength and gets up and down the court at a good pace for a player his size. He’s a banger, and not afraid to mix it up inside. He needs to continue to work on footwork and explosion. Any improvement by him on the defensive end will take him and his team to another level. He can also be an effective scorer 15 ft and in. His best days are ahead.
Calvin Kapral 6’9 Woodside, (Redwood City CA)
Kapral brings some intensity to his game. His long reach sometimes distracts shooters on the wings. He’s active inside, and doesn’t mind body contact, he does tend to pick up ticky tack fouls. He has a good outlet pass on the rebound, and he does hustle up the court in transition. On offense he’ll have to improve his efficiency around the basket. He showed good shooting form at the top of the circle, and is not afraid to take it.
Alex Horiak 6’9 Jesuit, (Carmichael CA)
I didn’t get a chance to see a lot of him during the season. I did see him in the summer a few times. He might be considered a project, or a player with an upside depending on how you look at it. At 6’9 he should have impact his Senior year. He’s long and active in his space on defense, he changes shots and will get the rebound in his space.
Harry Nauci Harry Nauci 6'7" | C Santa Clara | 2021 State CA-N 6’8, Santa Clara HS. (Santa Clara CA)
He was unstoppable in a league that didn’t have a lot of size to match him. He averaged 15 ppg, 8 rebs. I was looking forward to his play in the grassroots season against tougher competition. He kicks the ball out from the post on the double team, he’s a good passer and screener, at the high post. He goes to the basket on the shot. He makes good outlets to start the break. He can knock down his jump shot from the 15 ft and in, but he has more work to do around the rim. His season high was 35 pts.
Zack Turner Zack Turner 6'7" | PF Bellarmine | 2021 State CA-N 6’7, Bellarmine Prep (San Jose)
This would have been a good time for Turner to show himself. He didn’t get a lot of time playing behind Bellarmine’s experience front line. He was a big contributor to his JV team that went undefeated last season. He’s an aggressive rebounder with long arms who can run the court, and finish in the key with either hand.
Chris Fan 6’8, Modesto Christian (Modesto CA)
He’ll be counted on to help shore up the inside for his team next season. Although not very physical he can alter and blocks some shots inside with his length. He can switch on to quicker players on the perimeter. He improved his aggressiveness going strong to the basket. He works well on the baseline, and he can hit the jumper in the key. He gets up and down the floor pretty good.
