Oldsmar Christian honored five seniors on the night as Central Pointe Christian came on the road and picked up the 73-63 victory.
Here is a look at some things we learned from the game.
Rolon gets it done
2020 6’2″ guard Luis Rolon had 10 of his 16 points in the second half alone. The FGCU commit lived at the free throw line, sinking six of them down the stretch as he helped Central Pointe Christian put the game on ice. Rolon impressed with his passing in transition and his ability to finish at the glass. He’s a hard nosed player.
Vaughn works hard
Perhaps one of the toughest attackers in the state, 2020 6’1″ guard Jerry Vaughn finished with a game-high 19 points for Oldsmar Christian. 13 points in the second half came alone as he was using finesse moves to the rack and scoring with both hands. Vaughn is as determined as they come. He’d make any low Division I/Division II or NAIA program very happy. The kid is a winner.
Dibba & Lual are intriguing prospects
2021 pair, 6’4″ guard Ali Dibba (11 points) and 6’7″ forward Julian Lual (8 points) did plenty in heavy minutes off the bench for Central Pointe Christian. I really enjoyed Dibba’s effort in transition, fighting for dunks and put-backs. He is a strong athlete who can really get up when he goes to the basket. As for Lual, he is a longer body who can handle his own inside and he draws a ton of contact, earning many trips to the free throw line. These juniors are for sure Division I talents.
Oldsmar gets a balanced night
On top of Vaughn, Oldsmar Christian also had a trio of players who did plenty, all adding 13 points to be exact. 2022 6′ guard Mike Malagies, 2020 6’7″ forward Roque Rosario and 2021 6’5″ forward Javaris Patterson each played some very good basketball. Malagies, a natural-born shooter was off in the first half, but posted nine of his 13 points in the second half which included some fancy finishes. Rosario is the perfect high school big, who is vocal, listens to his coach at all times and simply hustles on the boards and gets in the paint for buckets. He is an ideal Division III kid. As for Patterson, his trio of 3’s among his 13 points, brought a ton of energy to his side. He’s always making plays.
Rosa & Aybar contribute
Playing on and off in this game, 2020 6’6″ guard Victor Rosa (11 points) and 2020 6’9″ forward Jonathan Aybar (10 points) both contributed in this one. Rosa, an FGCU commit had some essential corner 3’s including the first points of the game. His IQ and fast-paced play is always fun to watch. Aybar, a UNF commit was gritty inside, getting to the free throw line a bit and his length continues to be an issue for defenses. 2020 6’9″ forward Modibo Sanogo pitched in with eight points as well, been a brute force down low especially in the early going.
