Week 10: Tuesday night standouts
In this article:
Tuesday night brought out some big-time scorers across the state and also one of the most insane stat lines that I have ever seen and I have watched A TON of basketball. See who stood out on the day and also who had the incredible stat line as well.
Grant Swenson Grant Swenson 6'2" | CG Broomfield | 2020 State CO – Broomfield
Broomfield had them a close one where they rallied back in the 4thquarter to win 78-76. In the game, their senior guard who is having a great season stepped up for another big game, this time being the difference-maker in the game. Swenson went for a season-high 25 points in the game and all of it came from him remaining on the attack. He went 8-9 from the free-throw line, he hit a 3-pointer in the game but he made sure to get to the rim. Swenson is a combo-guard that wants the ball in his hands when it matters and he is a poised guard that plays well under pressure.
Caleb Hanchett – Castle View
Hanchett is not a player that is known for his scoring but the 6’4 bruising center who typically crashes the boards and gets it to the open man saw something he liked and went with it. He finished with a new career-high of 25 points. He was the biggest player on the court and acted like it. He got to his spots, he backed guys down and he finished over the top. He also had a high of 10 rebounds as well. Every bucket mattered as Castleview was able to get by Ponderosa and they rode their hot man.
Turumbil Zaki Turumbil Zaki 6'4" | PF Denver South | 2020 State CO – Denver South
Zaki is a player that you do not want to jump with. He is a highlight reel and player that can dunk the ball. He has good size, he’s very strong and he has high upside. He uses his 6’4 frame to get around smaller defenders and finish and Regis Groff seen plenty of him on Tuesday. He had 25 points on 9-12 from the field. He went to the free-throw line because they were not able to contain him on the boards and he made them pay from the charity stripe. He was able to secure 10 rebounds and Zaki is skilled enough to start the break after. He can play with his back to the basket, knock down the free throw extended shot and also get out and dunk on a defender. He is a good prospect that is raw but will continue to get better.
Luke Hutto Luke Hutto 6'3" | SF Montrose | 2022 State CO – Montrose
The 6’2 forward from Montrose is quietly having one of the more impressive sophomores in the state that has gone a bit under the radar. Montrose is racking up wins and their young guy is leading them to those victories. Montrose beat Fruita Monument 55-48 and Hutto was perfect from the field. He had 17 points on the night as he finished 5-5 from the field and he also hit seven FTs as well. He is a high IQ player that does not force the issue and he stays within his limits. Hutto has had a stock boosting season and on Tuesday he had another big game that got them the victory.
Patrick Steed Patrick Steed 6'0" | CG Denver East | 2020 State CO – Denver East
Patrick Steed Patrick Steed 6'0" | CG Denver East | 2020 State CO is the calming force to that young and talented Denver East unit and in Tuesday’s game he changed it up a bit. Steed is a pass-first point guard that also can play off of the ball to hit teams with a few easy baskets but his bread and butter is his playmaking abilities, he sets guys up. In the Angel’s blowout win over Northfield for the Denver Prep League title, he made his presence known scoring the basketball. He finished with a game-high 22 points and also shot lights out from deep finishing 4-6 from beyond the arc. He also had six rebounds and four assists to go along with it but the quick senior was blowing by defenders all evening and gives East another scoring option.
Assane Diop Assane Diop 6'10" | PF Belleview Christian | 2023 State #107 Nation CO — Belleview Christian
Belleview Christian is in a zone and is slowly coming around to looking like the dark horse favorites in 1A and there is no secret as to why their season has turned around, they have one of the most interesting prospects in the state of Colorado in star freshman Assane Diop Assane Diop 6'10" | PF Belleview Christian | 2023 State #107 Nation CO . Diop is a 6’9 player that transferred in from Senegal and there has been a renegade ever since he has come over. He is putting up some of the most incredible stats in his small-time played that are leading to wins and in this game, he was just a block and assist away from a quadruple-double for the ages. Diop finished with 26 points, 26 rebounds, 9 blocks and 9 assists as a freshman. That is Wilt Chamberlain like numbers right there. He does it all and going off of the highlight videos, it is coming as easy as anyone in the state. More eyes are going to be tuning in to those Belleview Christian boys and they will ride their big man to the finish line if they have to. I am beyond thrilled to see him this summer but for now, he has a championship that he is after and if he is able to keep putting up numbers like this, who is to say they can’t win it.
