The opening round of district tournaments is typically a 1 vs 4 matchup that doesn’t yield many upsets but let’s take a look at some games that could see an upset on Monday.

15th District: Barren County vs Monroe County at Allen County-Scottsville – Monroe is only 10-17 while Barren is 21-8. Barren won both regular season games but only by 2 when they last played on January 20th. Aden Nyekan, Gavin Withrow and Will Bandy combined for 32 of the 47 Barren points and will need a better effort this time around to beat Monroe.

27th District: Waggener at Trinity – The defending state champions were beaten by 17 in their only regular season matchup against the Wildcats just last week. The Shamrocks are led by Zach Stahlman and Ethan Hodge but they will have their hands full with Dallas Rufus and Richard White. Trinity and Waggener is always a fun match-up and I think Monday’s game will be another battle in their rivalry.

43rd District: Lafayette vs Dunbar at Lexington Christian – Dunbar swept the two meetings against the Generals in the regular season but Ray Surratt has been having a great Senior season, averaging 23 points and 10 rebounds. The Dunbar front line of Tim Hall, Rabby Kamona, Robby Todd, Shyheim Drew, Lionel Kumwimba and Branco Balingate give the Bulldogs 30 fouls to use on Ray.

44th District: Madison Southern vs Madison Central at EKU – The 44th district is a blind draw so these two rivals face off for the first time this season on Monday night. Kole Browne and Braeden Ray are the Junior leaders for Coach Feldhaus’ team while Chad Fugate, Hunter Buchanan, and Nate Turner are all double figure scorers for the Eagles. Central is ahead of Southern in the KHSAA RPI but Southern has more wins. Should be a good game.
