Sam Powell, Oldham County – Powell is at a perennial 8th region power in Oldham County where he is predominantly playing JV this season and waiting his turn on the varsity. But Powell is a big bodied wing who can move with and without the ball and has a good shooting form. He’s already around 6’4 and looks to keep growing. Oldham will return a lot next season but look for Sam to carve out a big role on a team that should be primed to win the 8th next year.
Oliver Harris, Highlands – The Bluebirds are having a great season and Harris has been playing his part to help his team succeed. Oliver stood out at our PH Top 250 event back in August and has been a role player this season but his length and ability to finish around the rim and has shown the ability to shoot from range in very limited attempts this season. Harris could develop into a strong wing candidate in the next year or so.
Mekhi Smith, St. Xavier – Injuries play a role in rankings too. Smith has been limited to only 4 games this season. As a result, he tumbled down the rankings. But that doesn’t mean he can’t shoot back up when he’s healthy and playing well. Some have said Mekhi is a top Sophomore in the state. Hopefully he gets a chance to show that again soon.
Laithan Hall, Pikeville – Hall had a rough outing in the only chance I got to see him this season. He has played better since, posting 9 points per game on 43% shooting and 49% from three and has had a tremendous opportunity to play a ton as a freshman and Sophomore for the Panthers. Hall is a stocky kid who can absorb contact. If he can limit his turnovers and keep hitting open shots, he should be a solid prospect for scholarship level schools moving forward.
Jaiden Lawrence, Warren Central – Lawrence is really starting to come on for the Dragons as the season rolls along and is in position to be the next really good scoring guard for Coach Unseld’s squad. The fact that he’s getting playing time on a Senior dominated team bodes well for his development and Coach Unseld has high expectations for him moving forward in his career.
Inslee Carroll, Doss – Sometimes kids miss the rankings because no one on our PH staff has seen them play. That’s the case with Carroll. When Coach Stone reached out about Inslee, he wasn’t on our radar at all but that will change now as we hope to be able to get a good evaluation before the season ends or this spring/summer on the AAU circuit. Averaging 16 points in a loaded 6th region as a Sophomore is impressive.
