All off the board!
Ohio’s 2020 class of small forwards includes a pair of Division I commits, three set for D-II, two NAIAs, and a single D-III recruit.
But there are still small forwards available for every level of college basketball. Here’s all of them on that are on the Prep Hoops Ohio radar:
Top 25 Overall
Marcus Johnson | 6-3 | Columbus South
offers: Akron, Kent State, Stony Brook
Johnson is a wiry-framed wing with springy legs who slides his feet better than anyone on this list. He has proven — both with South and in the EYBL with All Ohio Red — to be an impactful perimeter defender capable of staying in someone’s shorts for 94 feet. His ability to stay attached to speedy ball-handlers is borderline shocking. Fights through screens, too.
Good rebounder who likes to push off the defensive glass. Makes plays in transition. Johnson is becoming a reliable set shooter, an important asset in the halfcourt. All in all, the unsigned senior is best in a fast-paced game.
Devontae Blanton | 6-6 | St. Edward
Skilled, strong-bodied playmaking combo forward. Blanton is very effective facing the basket from the top of the key and the pinch post where he can shoot it or attack. Knocks down creative touch shots from the shallow mid-range. Underrated passer in-traffic and in transition. Makes good decisions. Well-rounded skill-set.
St. Edward head coach Sean Flannery indicated that Blanton recieved D-I offers recently on Twitter. Prep Hoops does not have insight on who those offers are from.
Top 100 Overall
Brandon Gibson | 6-4 | Chaminade Julienne
offers: Mount Vernon Nazarene
Gibson is an athletic wing with an improving skill-set. He can knock down shots from distance. Ball-handling may be his weakness but Gibson can come right into college as a low-usage wing that slashes, defends, and makes good decisions.Standout defender who chips in on the boards, too.
Jevontae Jones | 6-5 | Richmond Heights
offers: Note Dame (OH)
Powerful athlete who can elevate for finishes and rebounds in traffic. Jones has solid length to go with an athletic frame. Defends multiple positions. Scores mostly in the paint and uses good footwork to do so.
Terry Baldridge | 6-8 | Willard
Lanky, tall combo forward who can score in transition and on spot-up triples. Confident scorer who mostly spaces the floor in the halfcourt Good athlete. Impressive ball skills and mobility at 6-foot-8.
Nolan Mader | 6-4 | Tippecanoe
offers: Urbana, Miami Hamilton
Knockdown shooter with a strong body that should translate nicely to the next level. Mader also shows the ability to score on straight-line-drives and rebound.
Jaden Woods | 6-4 | Newark
Two-sport (football) prospect. Woods plays more like a face-up four by catching in the high post, facing and making a move. He’s very effective around the basket because of his quickness, toughness, and touch. Woods, however, is quick and a good enough shooter to play more on the perimeter. Sound defender.
Ezra McKee | 6-5 | Wooster
Skilled playmaking wing with a raw frame. As he adds size, McKee should be even more effective playing through contact in the paint. The fact that he can score and make plays in traffic now is a great sign. Good shooter.
Sleepers
Gavin Schoeneman | 6-6 | East Canton
Schoeneman recently received a track and field offer from Kent State for the high jump, which speaks to his athleticism. He can also handle the ball and score over the top of smaller wings with touch. Effective in transition.
Nate Brighton | 6-4 | Evergreen
Brighton is a hard-nose wing who plays more like a four but continues building on his perimeter skills. Very good rebounder. Uses shoulder turns and pivots when attacking from the outside. Good shooter.
Ryan Cutler | 6-5 | Olentangy Orange
Lanky slasher with an undeveloped frame and an unorthodox, yet effective, outside jumper. Uses his size and long strides to get to the cup. Smart player who flashes playmaking ability for others to go with his elusive finishes.
Leroy Walker | 6-4 | Taft
Walker combines athleticism with a nice jump shot. He pops off the floor when he goes up for a finish. Mostly, though, Walker is comfortable being a floor spacer who can hit one-dribble pull-ups with a nice rhythm.
Nathan Gerber | 6-5 |Wayne Trace
Gerber has a 4.0 GPA and 31 ACT score. He’s effective around the basket by using the spin move and other manuevers that capitalize on his size. Solid rebounder.
Avery Scott | 6-4 | GlenOak
Avery has strong frame and good feet — a combination that allows him to defend most frontcourt players. Scores mostly inside on strong takes but can space the floor with a catch-and-shoot threat from distance. Plus rebounder. Tough.
Mali Harris-Strayhorn | 6-3 | Beavercreek
offers: Wilberforce
Defensive specialist who can guard most spots on the perimeter. Good athlete with a solid frame. Scores at the rim and flashes creative finishing ability.
Sean Moore | 6-4 | Reynoldsburg
Checks pretty much all boxes athletically. Will need to develop his skill-set at the next level, but there’s a lot to work with if he buys in.
Kal Jayaraman | 6-5 | Olentangy Liberty
Straight-line-drive threat from the perimeter who can attack close-outs or shoot it off the catch. Good athlete off the floor.
Tyrique Hawkins | 6-5 | Columbus South
Raw and long frame. Hawkins is a good athlete, too, who can score it in the open floor. Adding size to his frame and developing a game that lends itself to halfcourt ball will be his challenge.
Greg Stewart | 6-4 | Aiken
Quick and explosive athlete who is best in transition and on straight-line-drives. Gets to the rim in a hurry.
Tony Carter | 6-5 | Holy Name
Tall shooter. Carter is a confident sniper who, defensiely, uses his length to bother shots.
Corey Floyd | 6-3 | Brush
Floyd fills gaps. He can rebound, pass, and score at the rim. Plays with an edge. Defensively, his strength is an asset.
Kalil Camara | 6-2 | Westland
offer: Edison State
Raw athlete. Very explosive.
