Three of the top four teams in the state reside in Union County with Patrick School and Roselle Catholic on a collision course to meet in the final. The field is loaded with good players as Jonathan Kuminga, Cliff Omoruyi and Adama Sanogo will all play in the Union County Tournament. The guard position is just as talented with many Division I players on the teams. Here are the guards to watch in the Union County Tournament.
C.J. Wilcher, 6’5 SG Roselle Catholic 2020
Florida commit Niels Lane has been good for Roselle Catholic this season, but Wilcher is the go-to guy. The Xavier commit is a lethal shooter from behind the arc and can make plays off the bounce. Wilcher is not just a scorer as he leads Roselle Catholic in assists this season. Lane and Binghampton commit Richie Greaves have missed games due to injury, allowing for Wilcher to step up for head coach Dave Boff. The Lions will need his leadership if they want to repeat as Union County Tournament champions.
Noah Farrakhan, 6’0 PG Patrick School 2020
The IMG Academy transfer has been excellent for the Celtics all season as he has run their offense to perfection. Farrakhan is a blur in the open floor and can blow by defenders with ease because of his handle. He can finish tough layups around the basket and has a nice floater. His biggest strength is his leadership as the senior guard has helped sophomore Dionte Johnson throughout the course of the season. Farrakhan’s ability to lead the Patrick School will be huge in the Celtics’ quest to win the Union County Tournament.
Jayden Pierre, 6’0 PG Elizabeth 2022
Senior D.J. Watkins is one of the top uncomitted guards in New Jersey and has beautiful chemistry with Pierre. The sophomore point guard is electric with the ball in his hands as he can make tough layups around the basket or make a sweet pass to his teammate. Pierre can make opponents pay for giving him space and is a good on-ball defender. The Minutemen lost a pair of close games to Roselle Catholic this season, but Watkins and Pierre would like to beat the Lions in the Union County Tournament semifinals.
Amir Williams, 6’3 SG Linden 2020
Williams plays more like a forward than a guard because of his willingness to scrap for rebounds down low. The 6’3 senior is at his best attacking the basket and can finish through contact. Williams is an underrated passer and can lock up opponents on the perimeter. Linden has been a tough team to beat all season and that should continue in the Union County Tournament. Williams is one of the top uncomitted seniors in New Jersey and is looking for a special Union County Tournament to end his career.
Isaiah Hill, 6’3 SG Union Catholic 2021
The Vikings are the six seed in the Union County Tournament, but do not count them out. Union Catholic upset Hudson Catholic earlier in the season behind Hill’s 29 points. The 6’3 junior has a good mid-range game, but can also knock down three-pointers. Hill is a good driver and makes smart decisions with the ball in his hands. Union Catholic will need Elijah Barlow and Isaac Holmes to step up alongside Hill for the Vikings to make a deep run in the Union County Tournament.
