In the third quarter, it was clear that Westfield made the necessary adjustments. They scored 24 points in the third quarter and 41 in the second half to take control of the game. It ended up being a 54-40 victory for Westfield. Here are the top prospects from this out of conference matchup.
Griffin Rooney (2020) | Westfield
Rooney has been Westfield’s top scorer for the past two seasons. He scored a season-high 25 points in the win over Sparta. Rooney is a lightning quick guard who thrives getting to the basket. He used his ability to get to the free throw line often in this one. He scored 10 points from the line in this victory. This was one of 18 games with 10 or more points for Rooney, including the last six in a row.
Aidan Mastandrea (2020) | Sparta
Mastandrea has been Sparta’s leading scorer all season long with over 12 points per game. This was another instance of his dynamic ability to put the ball in the basket. Mastandrea did all he could on both sides of the ball for Sparta but Westfield was too much in the second half. Mastandrea is a player to keep an eye on when watching Sparta over the course of the postseason tournaments.
Jack Spellman (2021) | Westfield
Spellman notched his second straight double-double in this one. He finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Spellman is a multi-talented big on Westfield. He can do work down low or step out and shoot from deep. He finished with two made three’s in the win over Sparta. This blend of inside-and-out will be extremely valuable for Westfield down the stretch of the season. He also had six blocks on the defensive end.
Logan Howland (2022) | Westfield
Howland’s work on the defensive end and on the boards was a key factor for Westfield on their way to victory. He grabbed 10 rebounds to notch his 10th game with double-digit rebounds. During his sophomore season, Howland stepped into a starting role and has played his role perfectly. Howland is learning how to play the game from some of his elder teammates and this will help him over the final years of his career.
