Continue ReadingAs we continue to take a look at different lists across the state, we take a look at some of the top combo guards in the 2021 class. Sometimes the term gets a bad rap as a kid who can’t handle well enough to be a point or shoot well enough to be a two guard, but the truth about it is a good combo guard can be a great asset if he can truly play both guard positions. Many colleges are starting to look for them, and here’s a look at nine guys in the junior class who are the best of the best when it comes to being a combo guard.
Mike Gray | 6’1” | Blue Ridge 2021
When you look up the definition of a combo guard it should come with a picture of Gray next to it. The 6’1” guard is a guy who handles it like a point guard and is able to create off the bounce, but he’s wired to score the basketball and does so in many different ways. He can flat out stroke it from deep so moving him off the ball doesn’t hurt him, but he’s also able to create his own space and get shots for himself from all over the court.
Christian Moore | 5’11” | Cape Henry 2021
Moore has quietly been one of the better guards in the 757 area this year and he has done so playing both on and off the basketball. His height is a concern moving him off the ball but they have quick guys who can handle it too, and Moore is a sniper from deep with a quick release and deep range so running him off screens is always an option. He also has a good floater in the midrange and knows how to get in the lane off the bounce as well.
Elvin Edmonds | 6’2” | Hopewell 2021
” width=”300″ height=”225″ />
Edmonds has been running the point at Hopewell for three seasons now but when you watch him in AAU he’s often delegated to playing off the basketball with other guards who can create shots. He’s a knock down shooter from deep with effortless range but he’s also a strong ball handler who can run the pick-and-roll and makes good decisions with the ball in his hands. He’s a good finish in traffic and finds his way to the line often as well.
Mac McDonald | 6’3” | Collegiate 2021
” width=”300″ height=”225″ />
One of the more underrated guys in the Richmond area, McDonald picked up his first division one offer from Mount St. Mary’s and I expect a lot more to come for the high academic and high scoring guard out of Collegiate. He was known as a shooter in his early years but now that he’s the main option he’s shown improvement in his ball handling and has shown the ability to create shots off the bounce. He has in the gym range whether it’s off the catch or the bounce and he’s surprisingly shifty as well.
Jamonte Smith | 5’11” | Patrick Henry 2021
One of the best pure scorers in the Roanoke area, Smith is a guy who can handle the basketball and get you into your sets but he can also get a bucket at will whenever. He’s very good at getting to his spots in the midrange where he’s exhibited a good pull-up, he can create space on the step back and he has great body control as a finisher as well. He isn’t overly selfish however as he makes good reads when he gets in the lane as well.
Erik Prosise | 5’11” | Trinity Episcopal 2021
Prosise splits time on the basketball with a number of guys at TES but his willingness and ability to do a little bit of everything in the backcourt is impressive. He’s pretty shifty off the bounce and has good end-to-end speed, he guards both backcourt positions and he’s a good shooter off the catch as well. Whether you want him to run the point or not he’s a guy with a good IQ and plays within the team as well.
Justyn Fernandez | 6’4” | Monacan 2021
Fernandez is a really intriguing prospect because at his size he has good ball skills and a natural knack for scoring the basketball. He can put it on the deck and attack the rim where he’s an athletic finisher, he can create space and make shots from deep and he can get to the pull-up in the midrange as well. He’s wired to score but he’s also shown flashes of playmaking ability as well.
Jalen Leftwich | 6’3” | Liberty Christian 2021
Leftwich is one of the gems in the Lynchburg area as a guy who has good size and athleticism and can play all over the floor. He can get up and down in transition with the ball in his hands and he’s unselfish, he has three level scoring ability and a good IQ for the game on both ends of the floor. He’s put up big numbers throughout the season as both a scorer and distributor and could be a breakout guy to coaches this summer.
