The Huskies still found a way to win by double digits 55-39 as the Timberwolves could just never get going offensively. It was a closer game than the first time these two teams played, but not as close as the Timberwolves would have liked. There were three big takeaways from the game.
Dalante Shannon hype is real
Entering high school I heard about Shannon a lot. Then, I did not see him on the court at all his freshmen season. The thought crossed my mind without a doubt who is Shannon? A pair of leg injuries set Shannon back early at Edmond North. Since becoming healthy this past season Shannon has shown exactly why I heard his name so much. Slashing, dashing, accelerating past defenders to the basket was the common theme all night long. Shannon missed several opportunities in the first half he would typically make and still finished with 28 points. In the second half, Norman North had no answer for Shannon with the ball in his hands. As the final spring grassroots basketball season approaches Shannon is making it clear he is without a doubt an NCAA D1 prospect.
Abraham Aghasedo is the Most Improved Player in Oklahoma
There I said it. Aghasedo has been tremendous this season in the paint. At 6’7 he has long been a prospect you always wonder if he could develop into a monster. I cannot give enough credit to the Edmond North coaching staff for the work they have put in with Aghasedo. When he gets the ball on the block Aghasedo is a legit scoring force. Where he is most impactful is on the boards. In a year were Class 6A lacks any major size it magnifies guys impact the statue of Abhasedo. The massive improvement of Aghasedo makes him a sure-fire NCAA D2 recruit and who knows there could be a route for him to higher with added development or JUCO. D2’s do yourself a favor and get out in front of this one.
How has Norman North won 17 games?
I ask this question, not as a shot at Norman North but a great compliment. Let me explain. As a look at the Timberwolves, they only have two seniors on the entire roster. JJ White has never had to be the go-to guy and has for the most part done a great job adjusting to his role. White is coachable and it trickles down to the rest of the team. Every kid on the Norman North team would run through a wall for their teammates. Coach Kellen McCoy has done a great job putting the team in spaces for maximum success. This team is young and over the year has shown signs of it, but for the most part, they have really weathered all the storms sent their way well. The future for the program is extremely bright with a major starter returning next year off of injury this season. JJ White has improved a ton this season has to be counted on every night to carry a big load of scoring. Don’t be surprised if Norman North pulls off a massive upset in the playoffs.
