DONOVAN (RHINO) HERNANDEZ is a 5′- 9” PG – Junior at Frisco Independence High School. When asked about his outlook on the season, his excitement was evident. “It is special because it’s the most important one and we have a good chance this year to make playoffs”, he said with enthusiasm.
He is a pass-first point guard and a hard worker; thinking not only of himself, but his team as a whole. Getting his teammates the ball and making sure everyone gets involved. Donovan’s driving factors are playing hard defense, controlling the pace of the game, and making sure none of his team-mates get out of sync.
When it comes to improvement, Rhino feels his mid-range and 3 point shooting has improved the most. He currently averages 10 ppg, 3 rpg, and 6 apg.
When asked about the most challenging aspect of basketball he faces, his reply was “people tend to overlook me because of my height compared to all the other players”. To dismiss any doubters, he proudly states: “I play as if I’m the height of those other players”.
Although no offers have been extended, colleges are beginning to show interest. This young man is under the radar in recruiting, but with his goals and dreams he is confident that he will play at the collegiate level.
Once in college he wants to study business and hopes basketball will take him even further. When asked what he would like college coaches to know about him, he did not hesitate to say that he is a true point guard with a high IQ, and the most unselfish player on the court and will do whatever it takes to get the team win. “On the bench I cheer for my team even if I think I should be in the game”, he said.
Independence Head Coach Eric Davis tells us that Rhino has exceptional court vision, ball handling skills, and a desire to distribute the ball to his teammates, and he plays tough on defense. “Rhino is a hard worker, who has a desire to be coached to get better,” said Coach Davis. “His 3 point shooting ability is improving greatly. Offensively, he is sometimes compared to the high school version of Steve Nash”.
We wish Donovan “Rhino” Hernandez blessings and look forward to following him throughout the season.
