Ruot Jioklow of Simley (6’2, PG). Loved the way Ruot navigated his team through a zone defense today. Every possession was several ball rotations into a spaced attack followed by a feed. His one dribble creations were excellent. Impacted the game without taking many shots. Jioklow is scoring 13 a game on the season. Scoring 13 a game as a sophomore and leading the team in assists.
Sebastian Loder of Orono (SG). The Community Clash was not good to Loder but his recent play deserves a mention. After a decent start to his first varsity season Loder exploded once the calendar flipped from 2019 to 2020. Everything seemed to change after he scored 16 at Blake. Since then Loder put up 22 on Holy Family, 21 against New Prague, 19 against Hutchinson, and several other high scoring games. In fact last weekend was only the second time since the new year that Loder failed to score seven or more times in eight games.
Ayden McDonald of Hibbing (6’3, CG). Hibbing has prepared themselves for the post-season by playing a variety of quality teams in several different places. They are making five trips to the metro this year for six games. Last weekend Hibbing knocked off Orono by 15 points as a part of a four game winnings streak scored 13 in that game and since has had 29 against Greenway and 24 versus Deer River. When it comes to playmaking, few sophomores have a hand in as many of their team’s baskets as Ayden does (scoring, assists, passing that leads to scoring/assists, etc).
Brady Nicholson of Chaska (6’8, C). Brady scored 11 points on seven shots plus grabbed seven rebounds in the balanced Chaska win over STMA. What grabbed my attention was his ability to move after setting a screen and catching the ball while getting his feet in the right spot for a balanced finish. Approaching defenders can’t knock Brady off balance too much as he’s very strong but they try and bother him with contesting arms. This weekend Brady had no problem touching in shots after the quick catch and attempt to finish.
Nathan Staehling of Brainerd (6’2, SG). Staehlng is still working towards consistency in terns of big number production but you can see there is a basketball intelligence, a toughness, and a consistency of team play that a coach can trust. Staehling did his best work going to the basket hitting at the rim and making that mid-range shot over a contesting defender. He’s a player we will have eyes on going forward.
