In a second-round match-up of the West Central/Southwest District Tournament, Sumner built on a two-point halftime lead to go up 56-41 with just 2:22 to play.
A furious comeback rally by Auburn was fueled by a pair of threes on back-to-back possessions by Maleek Arrington and Kaden Hansen. Two late free throws by Champ Spencer of Sumner sealed the win for Sumner.
Sumner moves on to play undefeated and number one ranked Union on Wednesday in the semifinal game. The Sumner vs Union game is set for 7:45 PM at Mt. Tahoma High School. Auburn will face South Kitsap in a loser-out game on Monday, February 17 at 5:00 PM also at Mt. Tahoma High School.
Prospect Update from February 14, 2020
Josh Lear | 6-3 Senior | Sumner (First Team All SPSL 4A)
The Sumner Spartans were led by Josh Lear’s 24 points. He nailed five shots from behind the three-point line after missing his first two attempts. His shooting display included four straight, three-point makes in the third quarter. He was able to score in a 1-4 low set at the end of the third quarter by knocking back his defender and quickly rising up to swish a 23 footer as the buzzer sounded.
Champ Spencer | 6-7 Junior | Sumner (Second Team All SPSL 4A)
The transfer from Bonney Lake had missed four straight free throws before finally hitting two in a row in the last 20 seconds of play. Spencer was a perfect 8 for 8 from the field. His most impressive bucket came as time expired at the end of the half. He grabbed a loose ball near the half-court line with just three seconds left and raced up court, stopped on a dime, and rose up. He surprised the defender chasing him down, who flew past him, leaving him wide open to knock down a 17 footer. He displayed a quick release, soft touch, and a great nose for the ball on offense.
Nathan Voliva | 6-7 Junior | Sumner

He walked to the bench with what appeared to be a sore knee and did not return to action. He had two offensive rebounds, and one put back bucket inside. His most impressive play came after he got free along the baseline for a two-handed dunk just before the first-quarter buzzer.
Amar Rivers | 6-5 Junior | Auburn (Second Team All NPSL 4A)
Rivers’ stock continues to rise. Despite Sumner applying an effective and smothering 3-2 zone all night, Rivers was able to slide between defenders and finish at the rim. The slender wing player got fouled while in the act of shooting six times as the Sumner defenders were unable to keep him in front. He also stepped out to hit one great looking three-point shot. He did most of his damage attacking from the high post where he was able to score on 6 of 12 attempts. He continues to show a high motor and sweet touch.
Trevon Blassingame | 6-5 Sophomore | Auburn (First Team All NPSL 4A)
Blassingame was clearly the focus of Sumner’s zone defense but the long and rangy sophomore still managed to display his ability to handle the ball, draw defenders, make the right pass and attack the rim when possible. He looked comfortable knocking down one three and displayed a fiery tenacity on defense despite not having his best scoring night.
