Those losses, combined with a win by Topeka High over Washburn Rural, created a little separation at the top. Those atop the heap, once again, are High and Rural, the co-champions from a season ago.
Here are some of the key contributors to the shakeup Friday night:
King Sutton, senior, Topeka High:
With no big man to counter Sutton, the senior had his way in the paint, tallying 19.
Da’Vonshai Harden, senior, Topeka High:
Who’s played in more big games in his career than the quarterback Harden? He knocked down three three-pointers for 15 in the big win at Rural.
Chris Dixon, junior, Junction city:
The 6-foot-4 junior had 15 points, including 12 in the crucial third period in which the Blue Jays outscored Highland Park 14-8. Dixon has been big in some of the biggest league games: 17 versus Topeka High, 14 versus Washburn Rural, 10 against Topeka West, and now 15 in Friday’s upset.
Charles Snyder, junior, Emporia:
Snyder shot 10-12 from the field and notched 22 in the upset of Topeka West. Like Dixon, Snyder has been effective in some big games. In two wins against Topeka West, he put up 26 and 22. He tallied 26 against Washburn Rural and 33 against Topeka High.
Skyler Douglas, senior, Emporia:
While Snyder was Mr. Inside for Emporia, the 5-foot-10 Douglas was Mr. Outside against Topeka West. Douglas scored 15 points against the guard-heavy Chargers.
Elijah Brooks, sophomore, Topeka West:
Coming out on the losing end against Emporia, Brooks put up a good fight for the Chargers. He went 8-15 from the field, 4-4 from the line, and finished with 22.
CJ Powell, junior, Highland Park:
Junction City has little by way of size to compete with the 6-foot-7 Powell. He connected on three three-pointers and scored 17 in the loss.
