Continue ReadingShawn Phillips and the Belmont basketball team traveled to Summit Country Day Saturday evening where they gathered a nice road win. While the first quarter looked to be an evenly matched game, Belmont quickly took over the game in the second quarter ending the half up 31-19 and ultimately winning the game 60-40.
Shawn Phillips ( 12pts, 16reb, 3blk ) is a true big man. It is no secret that the 6’10 Sophomore is the center of the Belmont offense. The second the ball is on its way to him, you can almost bet there are 2-3 people swarming him which led to what I was most impressed with, his hands. Shawn displayed the ability to get rid of the ball quickly in the post. Almost immediately he would find a pass to the perimeter knowing that he was going to be swarmed. There were times where I think he could have had his head on more of a swivel to better gauge the amount of pressure, but overall his hands and passing were solid. He is an efficient rebounder and controls the paint on defense. He already has a nice list of offers, but this coming AAU season is going to be huge for him. Shawn is currently the #2 prospect in the Ohio 2022 class.
While Shawn generally gets noticed on the court, there were also some other standouts in the Belmont vs Summit game.
2020 G Logan Moore had 7pts 9ast and 4reb. He showed good decision making and was crafty on the ball.
2023 G Antaune Allen is going to be a fun player to watch the next couple of years for Belmont. The Freshman can score the ball and has some bounce as well. He almost postered someone but decided to lay it in. Antaune finished the game with 13pts and 3reb.
While Summit struggled for the majority of the game, 2021 G Matt Dahling led the way with 14pts. He made 4 shots from behind the arc to show off his range. He also made some great decisions while passing the ball.
