This thriller was nothing short of one of the best rivalry games I have seen this season. As the Patriots upset the Mustangs 65-62 in double overtime.
The Backstory: The Patriots have beat up on the Mustangs for years. That all changed when the Patriots’ assistant coach took the head job at Sachse HS last year. Once this happened, it gave Sachse leverage and an inside track. These two teams have already played twice this year splitting wins Lakeview won the first game 67-44 & Sachse won the second game 70-38. Coming into Tuesday night’s game the district standing has Sachse 2nd place & the Patriots 3rd place. So this matchup would set the tone for who would hold the 2nd seed in the district. So with that being said, this rivalry had all the making of an HBO action film. The game had three big-time buzzer-beaters. The first one at the end of regulation by Lakeview, another at end of 1st overtime by Sachse and then the BIG game-winner 1.3-second bank shot dagger from way deep just past half court for the WIN!!!
Standout Players:
6’8| Senior | Donte Houston Jr.| of Lakeview is an elite player and was unstoppable all game long; demonstrating why he currently holds multiple D1 offers. Houston Jr. was the primary reason that kept Lakeview in the game. This kid was a triple threat offensively dominating on the low post & went 5-6 on mid-range shots. Oh, that’s not all, he also has a nice touch behind the arc hitting 2-2. Houston finished the game scoring 23pts, 6reb, 3blks & 4asst.
Strengths:(Rim Protector, Inside/Mid-range Game, Footwork)
6’3| Junior | Dylan McKeon | of Sachse gave Lakeview more trouble than most. McKeon is tough to close out on as he has a quick release and a nice touch from the arc either off the dribble or spotting up. Dylan plays well with or without the ball in hand. He created several shots for his teammates. The 6’3″ shooter recorded 4/6 3FG, 4/5 FT, 22 points, 5Reb, 2Stl, & Multiple assists for the game.
Strengths: (Knock Down Shooter, High IQ, Team Player)
Impact Players:
6’1 | Senior | Omari Smith |of Sachse was the most impactful player for Sachse during this matchup on both ends of the court. Smith opened the game with the hot hand hitting two back to back three-pointers. This player has a very high motor and has active hands-on defense. Omari finished the game with 12pts, 5 assists, 2 steals.
6’2 | Junior | Will Kamara | of Lakeview was locked in and on fire hitting some big shots for the Patriots when they needed it most. Kamara is a streaky shooter, but in this matchup he was clutch scoring 15pts and the game-winning 1.3-second long-distance buzzer-beater bank shot that he didn’t call glass on. LOL
Notable Players that shouldn’t go unnoticed:
6’1 | Junior | Amir Mason | of Lakeview is one of the top key players on the Patriots’ roster. Mason finished the game with two three-pointers and a total of 10pts.
6’2 | Senior | DQ Burton | of Lakeview makes the Patriots go as he showed great composure during some hectic times of the game. What Burton brings to the game is hard to find in point guards nowadays, great poise and a floor general. He finished with 10pts & 7 assists
6’3 | Junior | Isaac Brown | of Sachse impressed me with the way he played the game with non-stop movement and great decision making. Brown also had some nice buckets that helped extend the lead for the Mustangs during the second quarter. He finished with 9pts, 6reb. This is a player to keep an eye on.
In Closing: Who knows how things will end up in district play or playoff, but I will say that both of these teams are well-coached and will be ready come playoffs.
