The Silver Foxes have been rolling along in the Mid-Willamette League, on the cusp of finishing up an undefeated league finish and grabbing another conference title. Silverton hasn’t lost since mid-December and it’s a fact not lost on senior David Gonzales. The tough 5-foot-11, 160-pound point guard recently picked up his first scholarship offer as he looks forward to leading the Silver Foxes to the post-season.
Silverton last lost a game at the Capitol Classic when they dropped one to Sherwood. Since them, the Silver Foxes have run off 18 wins in a row and Gonzales has enjoyed how things have come together. “We’re young to a certain degree – we have five seniors but we’re still young at the same time,” Gonzales said. “Everyone’s been stepping up big time.”
Gonzales has been a huge part of the success. Getting the job done both with his scoring and his passing, the point guard has been hitting his outside shots while also getting to the bucket almost at will. “I did a lot of things in the off-season that have helped me,” Gonzales said. “I got in the weight room and tried to get physically stronger and it’s come a long way. I’ve worked on my quickness and my agility quite a bit and it’s helped.”
College programs have been keeping an eye on Gonzales for quite some time and he was talking with a number of D-II schools in the fall. Corban recently stepped up with an offer and while other schools remain in contact, Gonzales has also been exploring other routes. For example, Clackamas CC recently sent their entire coaching staff to watch him play.
“I’ve been focused on getting my GPA up a little bit and been in the books a lot more,” Gonzales said. “JC might be an option but as of right now I really don’t know.”
As his recruitment plays out, Gonzales is looking forward to the post-season. Silverton wraps up their Mid-Willamette championship with Senior Night next Tuesday and then it’s what he hopes is a run at the 5A title. “I’m super excited and every day we go hard in practice,” Gonzales said. “I think if we continue to grow and push each other in practice it will show on the court. That’s what will make it tough for opponents to play us down the stretch in playoff time.”
Gonzales currently ranks as the #13 player in the updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
