MVL was led last year by Jake Kettner, a player that had Mr. Basketball committee members at his games often while he led his team to a 25-4 season. With Kettner now playing basketball at Sioux Falls most felt MVL would be solid, but would take a step back.
There have been no steps back. In fact MVL just beat Class A’s third ranked team WEM last night improving their record to 23-2 on the season. MVL is likely to lose less games this year than they did last season! And again, leading the way is Dunwa Omot averaging 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and a couple steals a contest.
“This year is going really well,” Dunwa told Prep Hoops. “We are currently 23-2 and nearing the final games of the regular season. I feel like this has been my best year. After graduating two really experienced seniors from last season I had to take a bigger roles as a leader on both sides of the ball.”
And Omot has done just that. MVL is the 10th ranked team in Class AA basketball and Omot is confident they have a big section run coming up.
“I’m really confident in the team this year, I think we can make a deep run in the playoffs and the goal is always to get to state,” Omot explained. “We have another good section with Belle Plaine, Jordan, and obviously a really talented Waseca squad so the postseason should be another exciting year.”
Omot has had several basketball influences in his life including former players, coaches, and others. As far as the big name he has followed closely?
“An NBA player I look up to the most is Lebron James and his ability to change the game in more than just scoring,” Omot said. “His leadership is like no other and the respect by his teammates and coaches give him is amazing.
“Kory Kettner has helped me a lot to grow as a player and person. The knowledge of the game and recruiting process that he has is one of the best. He first recruited me to play for the Minnesota Rise program in the 7th Grade and I’ve stuck with them ever since. The opportunity to play in front of college coaches is amazing and the bond built by our team throughout the year is special.”
Oh and several schools are interested in Dunwa. Several programs are hoping Omot will play for them in the future.
“Right now the door is wide open as far as what school I’m going to play at next year. I’ve visited different levels from junior college to D2, Bethany, St. Olaf, Gustavus, NDSCS, Waldorf, and Southwest Minnesota State are showing interest. So I’m not sure what school or level yet.”
Omot has offers from Lake Region State, Waldorf, and Bryant & Stratton.
“This past summer I visited St Olaf, Gustavus, Bethany, Waldorf, NDSCS, and unofficially took a gameday visit to SMSU,” Omot stated.
