Campbell has been a consequential instrument to the success of the powerhouse Bulldogs since his junior season, starting at the one-role in Memorial’s run to the state semifinal game in 2019 before returning for his senior season in 2020.
“My leadership, making my teammates better,” Campbell said of his best components, “and bringing energy to any team.”
Boasting 14 wins and 3 losses, Campbell and the Bulldogs have yet to slip outside of the top six in the OSSAA weekly coach’s poll in the 2020 campaign.
Campbell spent his senior summer playing for the Oklahoma Eagles, Prep Hoops Circuit member in the Midwest Region. Campbell was as integral to his AAU team as he is to Memorial, even netting a 41-point performance in a weekly circuit of memorable games in the 2019 AAU season.
CJ Campbell with the Oklahoma Eagles.Campbell has an outstanding motor, outlasting opposing guards in the consequential periods of games on a regular basis; he has quickness, pace, change of direction and off-ball movement, allowing him to escape the adhesive of often longer or taller defenders.
His knowledge of off-ball movement and spot-finding, in fact, rivals even his astute ball-handling capabilities, allowing the Bulldogs the benefit of a matchup inequity in its point guard. He also uses this skill often to crash and outbound opposing players on the jump to capture rebounds.
Defensively, Campbell’s prowess may be as difficult to exceed as his offense’s; he moves laterally void of friction or choppiness as he chokes ball-handlers away from the basket. His quickness and immense defensive training are apparent as he counters the movements of ball-handlers, forces them into their non-dominant dexterities and ultimately, prevents made-baskets.
Campbell mentioned the altruism of a program as a stipulation to his intended school.
“A school that pushes you everyday to be the best version of your self,” Campbell said he hopes to find.
