Continue ReadingAttention college basketball coaches at most levels, you want to get to know explosive 6-foot-6 Albert Lea forward Chay Guen very soon (shown above in a photo from Chay’s twitter). You may regret it if you don’t!
Chay is rare for many reasons: 1) He’s led Albert Lea to an even record (10-10) after 20 games of play, something that hasn’t happened in about 20 years, 2) Chay is that 6-foot-6 jumping jack monster with wide shoulders and a strong frame, and 3) he’s averaging 20 points and 8 boards a game for the most surprising team in Minnesota.
“This year has been pretty well for us as a team and as a town Albert Lea hasn’t seen (success) in a long time so it’s a great feeling to have more people come out to our games,” Guen said.
“Our goal is to keep pushing through and don’t get too high headed and as a team we can do a lot of damage in sections and make a run for state because we’ve beaten several teams we will see during sections.”
That includes the Austin Packers, the big favorite in 1AAA. Chay had 23 points and 13 rebounds in Albert Lea’s 72-71 victory over Austin, the first time the Tigers had beaten Austin in about 14 years.
“We know what we are capable of and we just have to show it on the court but it all starts at practice and committing to the team,” Chay said. “After the Austin game we were very emotional and happy that we broke apart the long losing streak we had with them, so we just let it out with excitement!”
As they should have! Chay has been growing rapidly as a basketball player the past 24 months. His love of basketball comes from watching the best player in the world right now, LeBron James. LeBron has been a big influence, as have been his coaches.
“Lebron has been a favorite since I started playing basketball in the six grade,” Guen explained. “Also my coaches right now are a big part of it and I feel that we are on the same page.”
Some local schools have began to get in contact with Guen about playing at the next level, and we expect more will soon.
“I am hearing the most from Riverland, RCTC, and Bethany Lutheran,” Chay said. And what type of player will the schools be getting if they land Chay?
“A quick four that can jump and pass and hustle when he wants to!”
