Haskins leads the 14-3 Islanders with 17.1 points per game highlighted by a 27 point opening game splash followed later in the month by a 31 point game against Benilde-St. Margaret’s. So far it’s been a memorable year.
“(The season) is going really well,” Cade told Prep Hoops. “My defense is something that I’m proud of because it’s just been getting better. From when the season started to know, and I think it’s because I’ve wanted to play defense more. But defense is still something I want to get better at.”
Minnehaha Academy is everyone’s favorite to win Class AAA but the Islanders are the defending champions and the goal for DeLaSalle is definitely gold.
“The goal for the rest of the season is to win our conference, our section, then win state,” Haskins said. “That was the goal at the start of the season and nothing has changed.”
One thing that has changed is Cade’s future opportunities. He received a scholarship offer from North Dakota earlier in the year and it’s something that has motivated Cade. But at first it came with a shock.
“I didn’t really believe it honestly,” Cade said when UND offered him. “It took a few days to set in. It was and still is an amazing feeling.
“We (the UND coaches and Cade) have a good relationship. I’ve been there to see them play and they have came to see me play this season. But the coaches are great there. Great people and great coaches.”
UND isn’t the only team tracking Haskins close. A number of other D1 programs have been in contact commonly.
“I have heard from a lot of schools. But the ones that talk to me the most are probably George Washington, St Thomas, and Cal Poly. I have probably talked to these schools close to every day this week.”
Haskins also joined soon-to-be D1 Minnesota 17u teammate Treyton Thompson as a Gopher guest earlier in the year.
“I was at the game will Treyton Thompson right before he committed,” Cade said. “I heard from the Minnesota staff at the start of the season but not so much lately.”
When it comes to prospects few have shot up the charts like Haskins. Not only has his played taken a big step forward, he also grew 2-3 inches which obviously helps. Another motivation? A humbling last spring.
“Biggest (motivator) is probably when I got cut from D1 Minnesota and Howard Pulley. I ended up playing for Pulley but it just fueled me to keep working. I challenged myself by playing against better players.”
Now Haskins is one of those better players likely ranking as one of the top two, if not the top wing prospects in Minnesota’s 2021 class.
