Desert Vista was the 1 seed and Skyline was the 4. These two were the top two teams according to Max Preps.
The game went as planned in the first half going back and forth with a 22-20 DV lead.
The third quarter was a different story. DV won the qtr 20-6 and coasted the rest of the way for a 63-44 victory and a spot in the 6A Chip vs neighboring school rival Mountain Pointe.
Skyline will lose a lot of stud seniors including Dayton Harris, who may be the best player ever to suit up for them!
DV will play Mountain Pointe for the third time this season and won the first two by 10 and 12.
DV is clearly the favorite in the Final but it is hard to count out a team that just keeps winning and playing hard for first year Coach Kaimarr Price.
You have to be happy for Coach Gino Crump reaching the finals with the season he went through and all the turmoil then finish it up at ASU for a chance for a ring.
Final score was 63-44 Desert Vista.
Here were some of the standouts from the game:
Marcus Wady PG 5’11 2021 Desert Vista
-A quick ball handler who gets by his man on the regular. He slithers in the lane and can drop a nice pass to a cutter or find a shooter. His perimeter shooting is slowly getting better with age and so is his decision making. He hesitates to get the defense off balance and then can go by him with a quick burst. He scored 5 points with multiple assists.
Andrew King SG 6’2 2022 Desert Vista
-The most valuable player in this game was one of my X-Factors and he came through with flying colors. Skyline’s zone allows corner shooters and he did just that. He knocked down three 3’s to set the tone for the game which opened up more offense to other teammates. He has a stronger build/frame with quicker feet to defend. He has good length and he even showed improvement driving the ball to the basket and made a fancy layup in traffic, which isn’t his strong suit yet. He scored 15 points.
John Solomon PF 6’8 2021 Desert Vista
-A long forward with some athleticism. He is mostly a face-up forward but smartly moved to the open spots of what the defense gave him. He scored it effectively in the paint and even though he missed a couple, he stayed with it to help the Thunder win it. He had a breakaway dunk late in the game showing some pop. He scored 10 points.
Solomon showed off some of his potential in the victory.Tanner Poeschl PF 6’6 2020 Skyline
-A long and fluid forward is a tough match-up. He can shoot the 3 with some consistency and takes very long strides to get into the lane and score around bigger players. He is crafty to score with a nice layup package. He loves the reverse layup to not get his shot blocked. His activity was the main reason the game stayed close. He corralled many out of area rebounds to gain another possession. He is one of the best forwards left in the AIA. He had 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Tyree Tyler F 6’5 2020 Skyline
-An undersized forward has an elite motor to rebound the ball and keep plays alive. He was the X-Factor in this game for Skyline and had 15 points and 10 rebounds to back it up. The lefty can face-up to the 3pt line plus scores on tip-ins and takes it to the chest of the defender and bounces off to score. He can defend the 3 or 4 on the next level.
