And it wasn’t just one player — it was a group effort. Perhaps that is what makes this team so difficult to stop. Opposing squads can’t key in on a single player. At any given time, any Hortonville prospect on the court is capable of making winning plays.
Thanks to a strong second half, the Polar Bears snatched a road victory over FVA rival Oshkosh West. Here are six prospect standouts from Friday night’s battle:
Parker Lawrence — Hortonville — PG
Parker Lawrence was huge for Hortonville it its win over O-West. Lawrence did a great job of getting into the lane, which created multiple opportunities for himself and teammates. The 2021 prospect limited mistakes and came up big when his team needed him to. Lawrence was a steady hand in the backcourt for the Polar Bears in Friday’s win.
Karter Thomas — Oshkosh West — PG
Oshkosh West wasn’t the better team, but they did have the best player on the court. Karter Thomas was outstanding all night for the Wildcats. He finished through contact, made outside shots, and even had some really nice passes to open teammates. Coming off an unfortunate injury at the end of his junior season, Thomas is playing like he has something to prove as a senior.
Cole Warning — Hortonville — G
Cole Warning had a tough shooting night. Warning had plenty of good looks, it just seemed like the senior could not find the bottom of the net. Despite the fact that his shots were not falling, the Polar Bear guard kept his head in the game. He played great defense and stayed engaged in all aspects of this matchup. Then, with only a couple of minutes left to play, Warning converted on the biggest shot of the game. A made three from the senior guard gave Hortonville a lead that it would never surrender.
Warning showed mental toughness in his team’s victory.
Jacquez Overstreet — Oshkosh West — PG
Jacquez Overtsteet has a very high ceiling. The junior guard has long arms, great dribbling skills, and a pretty stroke from three-point range. If he continues to exponentially improve, Overstreet will generate some interest from college programs. Overstreet and Thomas make up one of the FVA’s better backcourts.
Jayqon Owens — Hortonville — G
Jayqon Owens does so many positive things for Hortonville. Owens plays solid defense, rebounds well for a guard, shoots the ball with great touch, and can create his own points. Despite being out for most of the first half due to foul trouble, Owens still had a very productive game.
Caleb Fuller — Oshkosh West — G
Caleb Fuller was the best shooter in the gym. The Wildcats ran multiple plays that were specifically designed to get Fuller open looks from behind the three-point arc. More times than not, Fuller delivered by knocking down the shot. Expect O-West to continue using the guard as a three-point specialist for the rest of the season.
