Prospect Spotlight: Jordan Foster (2020)
Prior to the 2019-20 season, there weren’t many picking Gilman to finish atop the black division of the MIAA. Fast forward to the last game of the the regular season and that’s exactly where we are. The Hounds are currently 16-9 overall while going 13-5 in conference play. They’ll take on Annapolis Area Christian this evening for their senior night game before opening in MIAA Playoff quarterfinal play on Tuesday evening.
A big reason for their success has been the production from 2020 guard Jordan Foster. Foster is a 6-foot-3 guard who possesses great athleticism. The southpaw has been a consistent threat in transition with his ability to finish over or around the rim. In the half court, he’s capable of breaking down his man in isolation situations and knocking down mid-range jumpers off the bounce if he doesn’t have a path to the basket.
I’ve noticed a drastic improvement in Foster’s overall effort this season in comparison to last. The group the Hounds have this year has showcased an evident chemistry.
“Last year we had a team with less chemistry and we were based around a more dominant ball-handler,” Foster told Prep Hoops. “This year we’re all playing for each other and we all have a positive mindset going into the game, we’re all willing to make the extra pass and it much more fun.”
Currently on a five-game winning streak in MIAA play, Gilman will continue to lean heavily on Foster as the postseason approaches.
“I have to do a little bit of everything,” Foster said as he reflected on his role. “I have to be a leader emotionally and physically. On the court, I have to talk, defend, rebound, score, assist pretty much anything you can name.”
Foster brings value to the defensive end of the floor with his versatility. He can get away with guarding both guard spots and even the wing in stints throughout games. His mixture of athleticism and length enable him to contest taller players and he’s quick enough laterally to stay in front of shifty guards.
“I still have improvements to make mentally. I want to come in more confident each game. That will come with me getting more reps in. I want to tighten up my ball handling and becoming a better shooter off the dribble,” Foster said.
Tuesday, Gilman will have no easy task in the first round of the playoffs. It looks that they’ll either host Loyola Blakefield or Archbishop Spalding.
“We just have to keep doing what we’re doing,” Foster reflected on the focus going forward. “Keep playing the way that we’re playing. We’re on a streak right now. We just have to continue to play good ball, make the extra pass. play for each other and everything will work out.”
Foster is not getting much consistent outreach from college programs, but I’m extremely confident in saying that he could contribute at the next level. Specifically the Division II or Division III level.
