Continue ReadingBarstow has not seen much success throughout this season, but Sophomore guard, Alex Villegas looks to change that over the next two years. A crafty guard who has made big plays all season for the Aztecs, Villegas hopes to use the experience that he has gained this season to lead Barstow into the playoffs starting next season.
“As a team, we did not play to our full potential. We had a lot of players who unfortunately were not eligible or even hurt but we stay together and played hard every game”, said Villegas. The Aztecs, who struggled all season but also had a downfall year last season, did not qualify for the CIF playoffs. This is a learning experience for this group as they will be a completely new team with the departure of the senior class.
The young point guard is using this season as motivation to help better the team overall. He looks to push everyone on and off the court to have a much more successful season throughout the next two years. Already showing his capabilities as a leader this season, the shifty guard is looking to leave a legacy with his Barstow teammates.
“There were a lot of things that I felt I could have done better to help my team that much more. This offseason, I want to work on little things to help my game but also help my team. I want to work on my explosiveness, speed, being quicker off the dribble, getting to my spots, being more consistent but also a leader with my actions and words”, stated Villegas.
The 5-foot-10, 135-pound guard is extremely versatile. It was a much improved season during his sophomore campaign, and he looks to continue to add more weapons to his arsenal. At the end of the season, the shifty guard averaged 11 points per game, 3.8 assists, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.8 steals. Villegas has displayed a ton of potential on both ends of the court.
The guard is exciting to watch and can put on a show. With multiple games of displaying his scoring ability, Villegas loves to add a little flavor of flashiness and get his teammates involved. The guard has proven that he can be a dangerous threat for the opposing teams, filling up the stat sheet with near double-double games throughout the season.
On the recruiting front, schools are slowly getting in contact and Alex has been hearing from a couple of schools. “I’ve had schools that want me on their campus to watch me play in person during their camps such as UC San Diego and last year I attended the Cal State Fullerton camp”, said Villegas.
A guard who is determined to blossom in the future just wants a chance. “I’m open to playing anywhere that will give me an opportunity”, said Villegas. With two more years of high school left, Alex hopes to capture the attention of more colleges with his playmaking abilities.
