Continue ReadingGonzaga hosted Paul VI at the Carmody Center on the campus of Gonzaga as two of the top teams in the country faced off. Gonzaga led most of the game by 7-10 points and eventually went up by 18 with 5:07 left. Paul VI, known for some historic comebacks cut the lead to 3 at one point but just did not have enough in the tank to complete the comeback giving Gonzaga an important 75-72 win. Below are five takeaways I have from the game.
Gonzaga Hits 15 Three’s
What a shooting night it was for Steve Turner’s bunch as they connected on 15 three’s which ultimately led them to winning this game. What makes them dangerous is the fact that they have so many different options to go to from behind the arc. It was by far the best shooting performance I have seen from a team this year.
Jeremy Roach Leads Comeback For PVI
Down 18 with 5:07, Roach led a comeback for the Panther’s that got the lead cut to 3 at one point. He got to the free throw line at will in the 4th quarter for PVI where he connected on 15 free throws in the entire game. His ability to beat his man off the dribble and cause contact when attacking the rim was terrific.
PVI’s Press Causes Gonzaga Trouble
Another way Paul VI got back into this game late was because of the full court press that put on late in the fourth quarter. The press designed by Glenn Farello worked tremendously and part of that is because of the defense by Will Paige, Jeremy Roach and the much improved defense by Dug McDaniel.
Chuck Harris Impresses
Butler commit Chuck Harris might not have had a big stat book type of performance but he was really solid for Gonzaga. It all started on defense with him as he was sometimes able to frustrate Jeremy Roach. He took smart shots and constantly got his teammates involved. One thing I noticed was how much stronger he looks right now. It was definitely one of the better performances I have seen from Harris.
We Might See This Matchup Soon
In the regular season these two teams split as the home team won each game. In the WCAC tournament we very well could see these two teams matchup in the semifinals on a neutral court which would make for another classic.
