Curie Rolls On Ahead of City Elite 8
It is always interesting to see how a team responds to a game like this where Curie along with Whitney Young and Simeon are in the middle of the CPS playoffs and then travel 5 hours to play a showcase game against a high level opponent. Curie was also without their head coach. The aspect we like most about this team is their toughness and balance. Yes Ramean Hinton is ranked #11 in the senior class and headed to SEMO as the headliner, but they are much more than just him. Hinton struggled shooting it, but got to the foul line and contributed on the boards along with defensively recording 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. The MVP of Curie’s 58-54 win over Mehlville was 2020 small forward Armond Williams. Physical and high energy forward that slashed to the rim with authority for finishes going for 12 points and 5 rebounds. The backcourt of junior Nick Owens and Elijah Pickens were excellent passing the rock and picking their spots to score. Owens finished with 9 points and 5 dimes while Pickens had 8 points and 3 dimes. A couple other intriguing small college seniors for this squad are Saiveon Williams and Josiah Hammons. Williams did a nice job defensively using his strength inside along with being efficient scoring recording 6 points. Hammons is a lanky 3 and D wing that can connect from beyond the arc netting 8 points. Now Curie will head back to Chicago and prepare for what they hope is a 3 game week for the city title.
Mehlville Hangs with Curie to the End
The St. Louis powerhouse hung with Curie throughout the game. Mineral Area CC commit Lamontay Daughtery continues to impress when we have seen him as a senior. Wing with size and length. Got loose in transition and was effective getting to the charity stripe. He had 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Dylan Branson is an unsigned wing that is skilled and we are big fans of his passing. As a scorer his usually reliable jumper wasn’t falling, but he showed toughness scoring inside for 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. King Waller is a tough wing that brings physicality and some shooting netting 14 points. Tough day for Kansas State commit Davion Bradford. He was getting mauled inside defensively on several calls that probably should have been fouls. One thing I would like to see is him keep the ball high instead of taking it low on the gather. Still did work on the defensive end as he had 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
O’Fallon Bounces Back to Knock Off Chaminade
It was a tough loss on Friday night for O’Fallon. They didn’t play well against their conference rival, but bounced back with a strong showing against Chaminade. It was physical undersized 2022 6’3” power forward Dawson Algee again doing the damage scoring in the paint and getting all over the glass. He had 13 points and 7 rebounds in the win. The backcourt of Drew Tebbe, Caleb Burton, and Amarey Wills each shined in spurts. Tebbe is a smaller guard that just gets the job done scoring 11 points. Burton is the highly ranked 2022 prospect that struggled shooting but he got to the line and contributed in other areas for 5 points. Wills provided a fourth quarter spark again just like Friday going for 7 points. This win is even more of a feather in their cap without their best player Shaun Riley who is out with illness.
Chaminade Seniors Shine, Sophomore Post Has Elite Upside
For Chaminade they were paced by their backcourt. Kansas State commit Luke Kasube wasn’t as aggressive as he has been in the past, but still hit three triples en route to 11 points. Matteus Case is an athletic two guard that played one of his better games we have seen this season. Scored at multiple levels with efficiency for 19 points. The prospect that we love is 2022 6’8” power forward Tarris Reed. The Chaminade sophomore was great in the first half with quick post moves and showing excellent feel around the hoop. Shot blocking presence and boards. We will have much more on him soon. Went for 12 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
Whitney Young Trio Put on Clinic
The big three in the backcourt for the Dolphins brought it on a primetime stage win over Marion (AR) 77-74. Duke commit DJ Steward was a little under the weather, but he didn’t look like it on the court jumping out with a flurry. Plus shooter, slippery driver, and is a really good passer. Also had the highlight of the day with a poster dunk. The Blue Devils commit had 26 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Georgetown commit Tyler Beard is playing the best basketball of his career over the last month. That continued with a 20 point performance where he was aggressive, shot it well, and stuffed the stat sheet for 7 boards along with 6 dimes. The states #2 2021 point guard Jaehshon Thomas had his best game with Whitney Young we have seen. Strong guard shot it well from three and was assertive as a playmaker with the ball finishing with 16 points.
Detrick Reeves Dynamic for Marion (AR)
We saw Detrick Reeves at the UAA Chicago session back in the spring for Team Thad and thought he showed potential. That was definitely the case as the unsigned senior wet off! The powerful and athletic guard blew past defenders with ease getting to the rim over and over along with having an effective three point shot. The bucket getter posted 35 points and 9 boards. Also got help from his backcourt mate Makyi Boyce who stuffed the stat sheet for 13 points, 8 boards, and 9 dimes.
Simeon Balance Picks Up Another Key Win
The Wolverines have been up and down this season, but are playing their best basketball at the right time. They picked up another key victory for their resume against the top team outside of the Chicago area in Collinsville winning 54-45. Top uncommitted wing Jeremiah Williams had a slow start, but then got things going on both ends with his drives, rebounding, and defense. He had 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. DePaul commit Ahamad Bynum is the #5 junior in the state and he did his usual scoring barrage in the first half going for 12 points. Fred Poole had one of his better games with the way he defended and picked his spots. He scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
Collinsville Struggles Shooting In Loss
This game showed how big of a load the star SIU-Edwardsville commit Ray’Sean Taylor has to take on for the Kahoks. The #12 2020 in Illinois flashed his scoring early with several of his explosive plays. Simeon then put a box and -1 on him to begin the second half and that slowed him down. He still managed 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Face up four man Nate Hall had a solid game. Good size and can stretch the floor going for 14 points and grabbing 8 boards. Sleeper unsigned senior Cawhan Smith struggled shooting, but still managed 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. What really hurt Collinsville was 4-18 from three point range.
