Class of 2022
Kamran Banks (Springfield Southeast)
This was our second look at Banks this season. The 6’2” two guard is a power wing that does most of his damage in the paint. Can handle it a bit on drives and works well from 15 feet and in where he can hit a short jumper. Active on the offensive glass for second chance points. He had 14 points and 7 rebounds.
Justin King (Mascoutah)
King is emerging as one of the best point guards in the class of 2022 in Illinois. Recently jumped up to #23 in the sophomore rankings. What you have to like about this 6’3” point guard is his length and projectability. At a young age he has an excellent feel for the game. Creative passer that makes sound decisions getting others involved. Slick ball handler that weaves in and out of the defense. Can finish with either hand at the rim. Smooth athlete that makes plays in the lane for himself and others. Decent shooter that can stretch it to three point range. King had 17 points (7-10 FG), 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Caleb Burton (O’Fallon)
Burton is also one of the top 2022 guards in the state. Currently checks in at #16 overall in the latest sophomore rankings. The 6’0” sophomore has a nice build and solid athleticism. Smooth offensive game with slick ball handling and the ability to hit stop and pop mid-range jumpers. Shows flashes as a three point shooter. In their Saturday victory Burton passed it well showing creativity with the ball. He had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals against Chaminade.
Dawson Algee (O’Fallon)
Algee is a beast at the high school level. The 6’3” power forward is built like a college defensive end and that might be where he projects best in college. As a hoops player he was extremely physical in both games we saw as a beast rebounder. Got on the offensive glass for put backs and was a force defensively as a post defender. Also throws quality outlet passes. Against Chaminade he had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Friday against Belleville West he went for 8 points and 10 boards.
Jaylen Drane (Simeon)
Drane is a long and athletic 6’2” point guard that ranks as a top 5 sophomore in the state. Explosive with the ball in his hands. He had one spectacular move where he split a pair of defenders and converted with his off hand at the rim. Flashes as a passer and is a solid defender that plays with an edge on that end. He had 5 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Avyion Morris (Simeon)
Morris is a tiny point guard that has worked his way into the starting lineup. The point guard has the trust of Coach Rob Smith. He plays with tremendous speed accelerating in the open floor. Made an acrobatic layup and hit a three. Also had a tremendous left handed pass threading the defense. He went for 5 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Class of 2023
Dalen Davis (Whitney Young)
Davis is one of the best point guards in the freshman class. The high IQ guard has found his way into the starting lineup for one of the premier teams in the state and is playing next to a pair of high major lead guards. The 5’11” freshman has a good feel for the game and getting others involved. He doesn’t back down despite his young age and finds ways to contribute on both ends. He had 3 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
Jalen Griffith (Simeon)
Griffith is a freshman phenom that has seen significant minutes for the state powerhouse. Shifty ball handler that has it on a string. He made a couple defenders older than him look silly trying to guard him. Can hit a mid-range jumper. He had 2 points in limited minutes.
