DJ Steward (Whitney Young)
The top ranked senior in the state of Illinois and Duke commit DJ Steward was a little under the weather, but that didn’t stop him from bringing another monster performance to the metro east. He opened things up with a scoring barrage including a corner three. The combo guard is one of the premier shooters nationally. Throughout the night he got points from all three levels on runners, mid-range jumpers, along with threes. Slick ball handler that gets to the rim with ease. He had a poster dunk that had the crowd going crazy. Despite all of this I thought this might have been the best we have ever seen Steward pass the rock. He only had four assists, but should have had double digits. Outlet passes, quick dishes with his off hand, and crisp passes to his shooters. Very impressive. His final line was 26 points (9-18 FG), 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Tyler Beard (Whitney Young)
The recent Georgetown commit was the talk of Illinois basketball twitter last week with his SportsCenter top play jumping over an opponent for a dunk. The second half of the season he has really been playing well. The powerful combo guard is playing much more aggressive taking it to the cup with authority where he scores or gets fouled. Jump shot also coming around as he hit 2-3 from deep. Strong rebounder from his guard spot and was outstanding as a passer for Whitney Young finding Steward and Thomas. He had 20 points (7-16 FG), 7 rebounds, and 6 dimes.
Sangolay Njie (Whitney Young)
Njie is the primary interior player for the Dolphins. Strong post that hit the glass at a decent rate and converted at the rim including a powerful jam for 4 points and 4 rebounds.
Ray’Sean Taylor (Collinsville)
Taylor is the top player in the metro east this season and it looked like the SIU-Edwardsville commit was going to have another one of his epic performances. Started off hot shaking his man for a mid-range jumper and getting to the rim for a score. He didn’t shoot it particularly well and was held down in the second half as Simeon went with a box and -1 on him. Still contributed in other areas going for 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
Cawhan Smith (Collinsville)
Smith is a smaller guard that when he plays well usually this team wins. It wasn’t his best outing as he couldn’t find the touch from the perimeter going 3-13 from the field for 6 points on a couple mid-range jumpers. Like what he brings defensively with his quickness and mobility.
Keydrian Jones (Collinsville)
Jones is a big bodied 6’6” five man that is a space eater inside. Wasn’t able to leave his imprint on the game like we thought he might with Simeon’s lack of size. Did have a couple nice moves early with a hook shot along with a spin for a layup. Would like to see him more aggressive in bigger games because it opens up so much for his team. He had 5 points (2-7 FG) and 5 rebounds.
Jeremiah Williams (Simeon)
Williams is the top uncommitted wing and second highest overall player on the board in Illinois. The athletic two way wing got off to a slow start, but then got it rolling. It really all started with his defense. Tough on ball defender that is hard to get around. Also can block a shot from his wing position. Offensively he got to the rim where he was scored or was fouled. Also hit a corner three. Jumper starting to get more consistency as the season has gone on. Went for 15 points (4-9 FG), 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 4 steals.
Sincere Callwood (Simeon)
The Simeon junk yard dog big man played limited minutes, but was effective while in there. He finished off a pick and roll and brought physicality in the paint. Went for 4 points on 2-3 from the field.
