Continue ReadingThe season is winding down. The postseason is right around the corner. Yet in the final weeks, there’s been plenty to chew on with teams fighting for spots in league and region standings. The schedules for the teams at the top of the regions have been backloaded, creating an abundance of huge opportunities for a bevvy of teams to stack up impressive wins.
Here are last week’s top teams:
Bismarck
The Demons secured a top-two finish in the WDA last week, beating Mandan and Turtle Mountain. Bismarck wasn’t supposed to be one of the five best teams in the state and contend for a region title, but here the Demons are. Beating Mandan was particularly impressive, as the Demons didn’t shoot well at all. But they forced 21 turnovers and Gunner Swanson and Treysen Eaglestaff were excellent. The Demons could very well face Mandan again in the WDA Tournament, with a spot in the state tournament on the line, so that win will be something to draw from down the road.
Hatton/Northwood
The Thunder extended its winning streak to 16 games, picking up a pair of wins over ranked outfits to secure the No. 1 seed in Region 2. Hatton/Northwood started the week with an impressive win over Kindred, beating the Vikings 70-62. Then, the Thunder earned a huge win over reigning region champs, Thompson, getting 22 points from Avery Thorsgard in a 64-58 win.
Velva
The Aggies put together a really nice regular season and will be heading into the postseason on a four-game winning streak. Velva picked up a pair of solid wins last week, beating Lewis and Clark – Berthold by 15 before ending the regular season with a win over Our Redeemers. Velva could very well see both of those teams again should the Aggies advance through the district tournament, and these results show that they are good enough to beat just about anybody.
West Fargo Sheyenne/Fargo Davies
The Mustangs and Eagles are on a collision course for the top spot in the EDC and the two teams will face each other Thursday for the league title (and possibly two more times before the whole thing is over). In order for the stakes to be the way they are, both teams had to take care of business last week and they both did. Fargo Davies gutted out a win over Devils Lake before destroying West Fargo to move to 19-1 on the season while the Mustangs edged Fargo North before ending the week with a thorough victory over Devils Lake.
