We are in the middle of February and the regular season around boys basketball is beginning to end. County and conference tournaments have begun and the state sectional brackets are formed. It is time for the star players around the state to take over their teams and lead them far into the postseason. Here are the top players of the week around New Jersey.
Matthew O’Connor (2020) | Johnson Regional
O’Connor led Johnson to a big week. They picked up a big time upset victory over Union Catholic in the prelims of the UCC Tournament. He finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and five blocks in the victory. He continued his strong week with 23 points against Brearley and 15 points and 13 rebounds against Middlesex. Johnson was 3-0 in the week led by O’Connor.
Zach Wygand (2021) | Woodstown
Wygand had a monstrous week for Woodstown. It began with 26 points, six rebounds, three assists, and five steals against Gloucester. He kept his hot hand against Clayton with 32 points and 14 rebounds. Wygand finished the week with a double-double against Pitman with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He has been a complete player this season for Woodstown during his junior campaign.
Ben Roy (2022) | Manasquan
Roy has been one of the leaders on the best team in the Shore Conference. He began the week with 26 points against Red Bank. Roy continue his scoring dominance with 22 against Shore Regional and finished with 11 in a blowout victory over Wall. Manasquan is one of the top teams in the state and Roy is a reason why.
D.J. Wagner (2023) | Camden
Wagner is the son of New Jersey high school basketball legend Dajuan Wagner. He is following in the footsteps of his father this season. Wagner is averaging 17.2 points per game in his freshman season and has scored in double-figures in every game. He dropped a career-high 27 points against Camden Catholic to begin the week. He continued with 21 points against Lenape. Camden is currently the top-ranked team in the state and has won 17 in a row.
Jamling Lama (2021) | Secaucus
Secaucus enjoyed a week of success with three blowout wins led by Lama. Against Lyndhurst, Lama finished with 25 points and six rebounds. He continued with 14 points and 15 rebounds against Harrison and 27 points against Ridgefield. Lama has had a big junior season and it has shown up for Secaucus in every way possible.
R.J. Weise (2020) | Allentown
Weise achieved a huge personal goal when he scored his 1,000th point last week. Against Trenton, Weise finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. He notched another double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds in a big win over Bordentown. Weise closed out the week with a 10 point, eight rebound performance against Central Regional.
Winston Brown (2020) | Pennsauken
Brown has been a dynamic scorer all season long. He is averaging 22.3 points per game in his senior season. That continued during three games last week. In a win over Woodbury, Brown finished with 21 points and he continued with 24 points in an upset victory over Bordentown. Brown put an exclamation mark on the entire week with a 37 point performance against Mastery Charter.
