Below is the first set of top individual performances from Saturday’s action at Mater Dei high school.
Brantly Stevenson, Etiwanda
Stevenson did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 15 points on 5-for-5 from three-point range. The 6-foot-3 senior finished with a game-high 20 points, adding a sixth triple in the second half, as the Eagles rolled Westchester, 63-33, in one of the more decisive victories of the day. Stevenson’s performance showed flashes of what potential Division I landing spots were looking for and that’s the ability to consistently hit perimeter jumpers.
Chibuzo Agbo, St. Augustine
The 6-foot-7 senior wing was too much for Capistrano Valley to handle. Agbo, who is headed to Texas Tech next season, finished with 22 points on 8-for-14 from the field, while also grabbing a game-high seven rebounds. Agbo continues to show an improved ability to stretch the floor to the 3-point line, connecting on four of his nine triples in the 48-36 win over the Cougars.
De La Salle sophomore Chris Bunch scored 17 points in a big win over Long Beach Poly at the Nike Extravaganza.Chris Bunch, De La Salle
The Spartans put forth one of the better team efforts of the day, dispatching Long Beach Poly with ease, 64-38, and Bunch was a big reason why. The 6-foot-6 sophomore scored a game-high 17 points in 24 minutes of action. Bunch showed his offensive versatility by using his athleticism and bounce to finish in traffic, but also used his skill, knocking down three of his five shots from behind the arc. Bunch proved that he deserves to be considered as one of the best 2022 prospects in the state.
David Olcomendy, Los Alamitos
The 6-foot-6 senior led one of the more impressive comebacks of the day as the Griffins erased a 14-point halftime deficit to Sonora to take a 63-57 victory. Olcomendy scored 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting and pulled down 13 rebounds to spark Los Alamitos’ strong second half effort.
Paris Dawson, Corona Centennial
Dawson continues to show why he’s in the conversation for state player of the year. The 6-foot-1 senior scored 16 points with 10 rebounds and three assists in the Huskies’ 59-51 win over Salesian, helping Centennial keep pace as a potential two-seed in the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoff field. A lot of SoCal hoops onlookers thought the Huskies might take a dip with the loss of three starters to transfer before the season, but Dawson’s production and leadership have helped Centennial prove those people wrong.
