Newark with a 17-8 overall record trying to hold on to it’s 3rd place spot in the division and improve it’s play-off seeding, and Irvington looking to reach a 500 record and qualify for a play-off spot. This was the 2nd game between the two teams, with Newark coming out on top in that one (59-54). This too was a close one as expected with Newark hanging on to win 62-60, by dropping two ft’s with no time left on the clock. Here are some prospects who stood out to me from both teams.
Newark’s Chance Carlton 5’9 2021 pt guard is the engine that makes this team go. He finished the night with a team high 16pts, 7 assts. He continually pushed the pace in transition finishing with deep penetration, or passing. He’s not super fast, but picked his way to the basket for controlled layups for most of his points. Carlton see’s the floor as well as any guard on the court. He’s a steady leader.
Nay’veon Reed 6’5 2021 forward has proven to be tough to deal with when he’s locked in and focused. He’s a thick body, with decent footwork, and a soft touch in the paint. He’s a good screener and passer from the high post. He can easily be a double double guy at this level. He scored 12 pts and 4 rebs.
Jacob Walker 6’4 2021 forward for Newark has been quietly putting in good work for this team. He and Reed make for a solid duo in the paint for this team. Walker is a longer and leaner with long arms. He had some key baskets late in this game with his strong put backs on the offensive end. He made two clutch ft’s with under a minute to finish the game with 10 pts, 4 rebs.
Tyler Harris 6’4 2023 for Newark is a nice Freshman to have coming off the bench. He contributes in multiple ways. I like his fearlessness and willingness to just play. At 6’4 and wiry he’s not a post up player, he’s more of a guard/wing. His ability to handle the ball and pass from the wings sets him up for potential growth as a top prospect in NorCal. He’s long and can defend 3 or 4 positions, he rebounds and starts the transition break, good vision and body control.
Irvington
Kaushal Bobba 6’1 2020 shooting guard for Irvington was the leading scorer in the game 21 pts. It was my first look at Bobba but he was on fire, at one point in the game he hit back to back 3’s to send the crowd crazy. He’s got a nice shooting stroke and when he’s feeling it, he let’s it fly. He had key buckets all throughout this game.
Sylvester Thomas 5’9 2020 guard showed real interest in playing defense. He’s got good intensity, lateral movement, and a solid body to get after it on the defensive end. He’s athletic with good hops, he showed a good euro step move to the basket. He finished with 7 pts and showed a real nice mid-range pull up jumper. He needs to be more efficient though on the midrange.
