The Nevada Mountain and Desert Region Playoffs have reached their quarterfinals. This is where the big boys come out. The top 4 seeds in each conference will host their home game, and look to advance to the Region Semifinals at a neutral site. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the sleepers that may emerge from the Quarterfinal action.
Desmond Green 6’9 C Silverado 2021 (#72PHN 2021) – Green could be an absolute game-changer for the Skyhawks. He has the size and length to give problems and be a deterrent around the rim. This is a great opportunity for him against a talented Coronado team. Green’s activity and effort will be crucial if the Skyhawks expect to pull off the upset.
Sterling Knox 6’3 SG Durango 2023 (#4PHN 2023) – Knox has had an up and down year. When he shoots it well, he adds a much needed dimension to the Trailblazers. It’s important for him to see a couple go in. Durango will be taking on a deep Foothill squad that is going to come at them in waves. This should provide an opportunity for fresh bodies off the bench to be productive. I’m looking at Knox to recover his shooting stroke in this game, and knockdown a couple big shots.
Jason Condron 6’1 PG Palo Verde 2021 (#60PHN 2021) – Palo is a different team when Condron makes shots. They have so many guys that can score on their own when Condron is on he provides a shooting threat to compliment Connor Peterson and Ethan Marcus, and he opens up the floor for Kade Madsen and Harlan Nichols. Palo v Cheyenne is one of the most intriguing matchups of the quarterfinals. If Condron is able to make a few 3’s the Panthers will be a tough out.
Andrick Santillan 6’3 SG Cheyenne 2022 (#5PHN 2022) – Perhaps no sleeper has a chance to impact the game like Santillan. He fits the mold of a Cheyenne player, a versatile unselfish playmaker. Without a doubt, Glenn Taylor is going to receive a lot of attention, this should provide Santillan with a perfect opportunity to step up and show why he’s regarded as one of the top players in his class.
Mikey Medlock 6’3 Arbor View 2020 (#34PHN 2020) – When I tagged Medlock as a sleeper back in the summer, it’s games like this that I was pointing to. No longer an unknown, the Aggies are going to need Medlock’s shooting and ballhandling in this one. Las Vegas is a confident team and Jason Wilson should get serious consideration for State Coach of the year. Expect the Wildcats to have a plan for Donavan Yap, and Larry Holmes, freeing up opportunities for the senior guard.
Zarius Benson-Moore 6’4 SG Canyon Springs (#30PHN 2020) – I believe the one team that no one wants to play is Canyon Springs. They have 3 high-level guys capable of going off at any moment. ZBM is one of those guys. Talented two way player with the ability to get hot at a moment’s notice. They take on a Faith team playing with a ton of confidence. At least 2 of those big 3 are going to need their fastball. I trust Alexander Spaight in this situation, now the question is can ZBM step up along with him.
Coleman Lemke 6’7 SF Faith Lutheran 2021 (#30PHN 2021) – The Lemke project has reached the conclusion of his junior year. He has shown flashes of why he so intriguing. The question now becomes can he be consistent? While mostly a pick and pop stretch, Lemke has several other skills that can impact the game. I’m looking to see first and foremost is he making shots, and if he is can he use his playmaking skills to create one of two plays for himself or his teammates?
