With so many games for fans to choose from, we want to lend a helping hand to narrow down a few options for 1A & 2A fans across the state and some players and teams to watch so let’s dive right on in and take a look!
Voyager vs Wilson Prep: This may be one of the top first round matchups out of any matchup that will be going on in the state. Both team have coaches that are highly intense, good guard play and legit size that can play inside and outside the post. The matchup to keep an eye on will be between Voyager Senior big man Jonas Aidoo and Wilson Prep Junior big Eric Wynn. Both are college prospects that have shown the ability to score and rebound at a nice level, which should make for a fun night for players and fans.
Winston Salem Prep is a program that is constantly competing for the state championship and comes in at the overall #2 seed in the West. One of the players that we feel will be a huge asset to this team is Senior PG Stephen Minor who brings the leadership and toughness from a guard that you love to see. 6’6 Sophomore Wing Anthony Sellars who is a proven D1 prospect, is another player that can step in for this squad when they need offensive production.
Weldon vs Louisburg: Weldon comes in as the higher seed and has some nice wins on the season but one thing we know for sure, you cannot count out a team that features one of the best guards in the state in Elijah Jamison. Jamison is a flat out stat sheet stuffer and we all know that tournament time is the perfect time for players that can get it rolling and Elijah is one of those guys.
Mount Airy: They come into the tournament as a #11 seed but they have more than proven that they can compete with some of the best teams in the west. With a record of 15-9 and a recent single digit loss to WSP, you can see why this team is a team that many don’t want to necessarily see early in the playoffs.
Washington vs Greene Central: Washington HS has had an outstanding season this year as they have a new look as far as coaching and a new PG running the show while Greene Central is a program that is not new to the state tournament at all. Washington HS Unsigned Senior PG Rashod Smith finished the regular season averaging 21 Points and over 7 Assist while his backcourt running mate Shooting Guard Omarion Blount is scoring 18 points per contest and pulling down 5 boards. Greene Central will need a nice showing from their Senior Guards of BJ Corbitt and Kentrell Suggs who are both averaging close to 15 Points a night.
