Tied at half and it came down to the final seconds where one of the best unsigned senior point guards in the state Alex Wood banked in a game winning shot to give Normal U-High the win 62-61. Here are our Most Intriguing Prospects: Normal U-High vs Sacred Heart-Griffin!
Alex Wood (Normal U-High – 2020)
Wood is among the top seniors in central Illinois and the floor general is also one of the premier unsigned point guards still on the board in the 2020 class. He displayed what makes him intriguing in this contest. The 5’10” point guard is a slick ball handler that has a feel for driving and getting his teammates involved. Made several nifty passes in the lane as well which led to buckets. As a scorer he used his quickness for a couple drives, but it was his jumper that he relied on. Wood knocked in several mid-range jumpers including the game winner. Also stretched it to three which he connected off the catch en route to his 18 points.
Drew Wollenschlager (Normal U-High – 2020)
This 6’3” shooting guard isn’t super athletic, but he is very skilled. Sound shooter. Rebounds very well for his position. I was very impressed with what he brought to the table as a distributor regularly finding his guys for better looks. Went for 9 points.
Angelo Bernal (Normal U-High – 2021)
First look at this 6’6” junior and we came away impressed. The four man rebounds well in his area gobbling them up in bunches! Efficient post scorer that seals, can work in the pick/roll, and catches dump off passes. Also had a sweet right handed hook shot for 12 points.
Brandon Merritt (Normal U-High – 2021)
Merritt is a thick bodied combo guard that was most effective as a shooter off the catch hitting a couple from distance finishing with 9 points.
DJ Starr (Normal U-High – 2022)
Starr put his name on our radar with his play. The 5’10” point guard was tough scoring inside on and-1s and reverse layups on his way to 9 points.
Kyle Ingram (Sacred Heart-Griffin – 2020)
Ingram is an intriguing small college stretch four man. Stands at 6’7” with the ability to shoot it from three point range where he hit a trio of them. Quality shot preparation and clean looking shooting stroke. The lengthy post showed he could score inside on quick moves and be effective in the mid-range. Liked what he displayed as a distributor with quite a few outstanding passes. He had 16 points on the night.
Andrew Schluter (Sacred Heart-Griffin – 2021)
This 6’3” two guard is a lengthy left handed wing that presents some projectability. Quality athlete that can put it on the deck slashing to the rim using angles. Caught passes on the move and was active on the defensive end. Solid passer with all-around potential. Finished with 16 points.
Jake Hamilton (Sacred Heart-Griffin – 2023)
We were surprised to see Hamilton was listed as a freshman. This shooting guard certainly did not play like one. Crafty player that did most of his damage inside either on drives to the hoop or quick moves on post ups. Will need to develop more of a perimeter game long term, but was very productive for SHG recording 12 points.
