Delbarton is the top challenger to the Wolfpack, while Jefferson and Mountain Lakes are also good squads. Morris County is filled with talented players with many of them flying under the radar. Here are the players to watch in the Morris County Tournament.
Christian Cevis, 6’0 PG West Morris 2021
The Wolfpack have been one of the top teams in New Jersey as they are currently 16-1 on the season. Senior Ryan Hillier has been the team’s top scorer this season, but Cevis is the engine to West Morris’ offense. The junior point guard is a pass-first point guard who excels at putting his teammates in the right position to score. His scoring has gone up as he is averaging 22.5 points per game over his last two games. Cevis is one of the most underrated players in New Jersey and should have a monster Morris County Tournament.
Matt Johnson, 6’4 SF Jefferson 2020
The Falcons lost their first two games of the season, but they have won 11 of their last 13 games. Johnson has been a go-to scorer for Jefferson this season as he is averaging over 20 points per game this season. The FDU-Florham commit excels at getting to the basket, where he knows how to finish around the basket. He is not just a slasher as the 6’4 senior can knock three-pointers from behind the arc. Johnson is one of the top scorers in North Jersey and is ready to help Jefferson make a run in the Morris County Tournament.
Dean Smith, 6’6 PF Delbarton 2020
Senior Jerry Jabbour may be Delbarton’s top scorer, but Smith is the key to the team’s success in the Morris County Tournament. The 6’6 power forward is a rugged post player who understands how to get position down low. Smith is a high-level rebounder as he rarely allows opponents to get offensive rebounds. He has a solid low post game and can step out to knock down jumpers. Smith has to establish himself down low for Delbarton to take home the Morris County Tournament.
Rafael Castro, 6’9 Dover 2021
The Tigers may be the 12th seed, but they have one of the most dominant big men in North Jersey. Castro has been a double-double machine this season as he has 14 double-doubles this season, including five 20-rebound games. The 6’9 forward is an elite shot-blocker as he uses his length and athleticism to block shots around the rim. Castro is a force down low and is capable of carrying Dover to an upset over Randolph.
Spencer Myler, 6’7 Mountain Lakes 2020
The Lakers lost a lot of players from their North 1 Group 2 winning team, but Myler was not one of them. The 6’7 senior is a versatile player who can score from anywhere on the floor. Myler can put the ball on the deck and attack the basket, but he is also capable of shooting the ball from the perimeter. He moves his feet well on the defensive end and is a solid rebounder. Mountain Lakes is capable of taking home the Morris County Tournament title, but the Lakers need Myler to be at his best.
