With the season winding down, Legacy hosted their end of the season JV tournament. It brought out some great teams and highlighted the future of Las Vegas High school basketball. In this article, PH takes a look at some of the standouts from the Legacy JV tournament.
Jayven Jones 6’1 PG Centennial 2022 – Jones plays basketball like a street fighter. He’s constantly looking for contact. He was at his best when playing downhill in transition. Jones is looking to drive 100% of the time, and eventually, he will have to refine his outside shot. However, at the JV level he simply overpowers his opponents. He was terrific helping his team to the semifinals.
Jacob Cici 6’4 SF Coronado 2022 – Cici is also a terrific Volleyball player. He showed off his run and jump athleticism with a couple of impressive flushes. Fluid athlete with the ability to sprint the floor, catch and finish.
Hudson Brandon 6’6 PF Coronado 2022 – The one thing Coronado won’t lack is size. The varsity already features sophomore Jaxson Kohler, now you can throw Brandon into the mix. He has good size and has the ability to grab out of area rebounds. Not the same athlete as Cici, however, Brandon does a good job of going vertical while protecting the rim. He was a force for Coronado helping them reach the Championship game.
Ray Payne 6’2 SF Legacy 2022 – Payne was just a scrappy dog. He managed to score down low, and over the top of much bigger players. He has soft hands and a strong upper frame. He was looking to drive most of the time, but he also manufactured points by catching and finishing. He played well in helping Legacy reach the semis.
Jaques Williams JR 5’10 PG Arbor View 2022 – I wish I would have had the chance to see Williams before I put out my most recent rankings. He certainly would have been higher. Williams is a quick power guard, that gets consistent paint touches. He is still improving his shot, but he can knock down 3’s in catch and shoot and standstill situations. Williams is a terrific two-way player that has as much impact on the defensive end as he does on the offensive end. He was caught in a numbers crunch at Arbor View, but he clearly has Varsity talent.
Elijah Burney 5’9 PG Centennial 2023 – I really enjoy watching Burney play. He has an elite basketball IQ for a player of his age. Burney possesses a great understanding of when to get his teammates the right shot, vs when it’s time for him to take over. He can shoot it and even at his young age, has the ability to deliver on time, on target passes off the bounce.
Giali Chapman 6’0 PG Centennial 2023 – One of the perks of this job is getting to watch players develop. I have had the pleasure of watching Chapman play a ton on the AAU circuit as he plays for one of the best 14U teams in the area. His best skill is his ability to space the floor with his shooting, but he also has good size and long arms for the position. He and Burney were an unstoppable 1-2 punch, leading Centennial to the championship game of the freshmen bracket.
Larod SIstrunk 6’2 SF Arbor View 2022 – I really liked Sistrunk. He ran the floor fluidly, showed good hands and was able to finish around the rim. He has a quick second jump which allows him to rebound and rim protect at a high level. He helped Arbor View reach the finals of the JV bracket.
