Here are five takeaways from Friday’s matchup:
Arrowhead is capable of a March run
Even though Arrowhead finds themselves in a section that includes Sussex Hamilton and Brookfield Central, I believe that this squad could still make a run in the WIAA State Tournament. With Gilmore running the show, the Warhawks can beat anybody.
Oconomowoc couldn’t stop Carter Gilmore
The Raccoons actually did a pretty good job guarding the Wisconsin walk-on. Oconomowoc limited Gilmore to just 19 points (I know, 19 points is a mediocre scoring night for Gilmore). But, because he drew so much attention when he had the ball in his hands, the small forward was able to pass and find open teammates.
So, while Oconomowoc didn’t allow Gilmore to have a big scoring night, it did allow him to beat them in just about every other way possible.
Caleb Flaten-Moore is an underrated power forward prospect
Flaten-Moore almost led Oconomowoc to what would have been a huge upset. The power forward did a really nice job of scoring and rebounding in the paint. Flaten-Moore, who is putting up 17.9 points per game, was really impressive. He made two threes and was really efficient from the field.
Keep an eye out for Flaten-Moore as a potential sleeper college prospect.
Chris Burg is a critical piece for Arrowhead
Burg came up huge for Arrowhead when it was needed most. When Oconomowoc made a strong charge in the second half, Burg caught fire and helped the Warhawks secure the victory. Burg scored 19 points on 6 made field goals.
If the 6-foot-1 guard didn’t step up, Oconomowoc could have been in great position to walk away with the upset win.
If Arrowhead’s role players play well, the Warhawks are going to be a tough out
We all know what Gilmore is going to do on a nightly basis, but if the role players for Arrowhead step up, then this team isn’t going to be beaten easily. Prospects like Sam Hytinen, Mac Wrecke, and Blake Ewer will be very important to the success of the Warhawks down the final stretch of the regular season.
Gilmore is more than happy to dish the ball to open teammates, but it only matters if his teammates can sink the open shots that have been gifted to them.
